Drownings and Animal Cruelty Cases Under Investigation Across Europe and South America
Authorities in Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Argentina are probing separate incidents involving water deaths and alleged abuse of dogs.
A 17-year-old student has died after disappearing beneath the surface of a Berlin lake, and a 28-year-old man drowned in a municipal swimming pool in Milan, according to local authorities. In South America, separate investigations are under way in Brazil and Argentina into the alleged drowning of a pit bull and the shooting and beating of dogs. The incidents, reported by police and prosecutors across four countries, remain at various stages of inquiry, with several key facts still unconfirmed.
In Berlin, Emmanuel T., an 11th-grade pupil described by his family as an athletic and capable swimmer, was bathing with classmates at the Krumme Lanke lake on a day when temperatures reached 34°C. He went under the water and could not be found by friends, who alerted emergency services at 13:52. Rescuers spotted him floating and attempted resuscitation in an ambulance, but he was pronounced dead in hospital. His sister told the German newspaper Bild that the death “came completely unexpectedly” and that he had occasionally suffered nosebleeds in extreme heat, though no chronic illness was known. An autopsy is pending. In Milan, Alfredo Arustigue Encarnacion, a Peruvian national who had recently turned 28, entered the closed “Guido Romano” public pool at night with three companions, scaling the perimeter fence. According to prosecutors cited by Italian media, the group had consumed alcohol. The man moved into the deepest part of the pool and did not resurface; his companions, a Brazilian, a Mauritian and a Colombian woman, allegedly left the site without rendering aid. A passerby was alerted only after they had exited the facility. The victim was found in cardiac arrest and died en route to the Policlinico hospital. The three have been placed under investigation for failure to provide assistance.
In Rio de Janeiro, civil police have indicted a 47-year-old man, Thiago Mattos Rocha, on animal cruelty charges after security-camera footage showed him walking his American Bully pit bull to Copacabana beach and drowning it in the sea. The incident occurred in April. Street cleaners and tourists attempted to rescue the animal, but it was already dead. Investigators say Rocha and his partner then packed their belongings and left their apartment; he has not been located since. Police also link him to a separate family conflict in which he faces accusations of insult, extortion and violation of domicile. The dog’s death may be connected to that context, the lead investigator told Brazilian media.
In Argentina’s Río Negro province, a man is under investigation for allegedly shooting a neighbour’s dog, Tita, with a carbine fitted with a telescopic sight on 25 November. The animal survived after veterinary treatment. Ballistic analysis matched a projectile recovered from the dog to one of two long weapons seized by police, prosecutors said. The defence denies the suspect handled the weapon and questions the certainty of the match. A four-month judicial investigation has been opened. Separately, in the coastal city of Necochea, municipal surveillance cameras recorded a social-media influencer beating his dogs with punches, kicks and a leash in a park at night. The man, who had posted affectionate messages about his pets online, now faces a criminal complaint under Argentina’s animal cruelty law. He has since deleted his social-media accounts. All cases remain under active investigation, and no final judicial determinations have been reached.
