The United States Navy has called off its search for a crew member missing since a MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea on 1 July, US Naval Forces Central Command announced on Sunday. The operation, which covered more than 14,000 square miles and involved aircraft carriers, guided-missile destroyers, and Air Force aircraft, was suspended after 102 hours without locating the sailor. Three other crew members were rescued and are in stable condition. The missing sailor’s identity is being withheld until 24 hours after next-of-kin notification. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway, but the US military has stated there is “no indication” the helicopter was downed by hostile action.

That accident unfolded amid a sharp escalation of US-Iranian military activity in the same waters. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces shot down four Iranian suicide drones near the Strait of Hormuz, which they assessed posed an “imminent threat” to maritime traffic. Hours later, Iran launched seven ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain. CENTCOM reported that six were intercepted and the seventh failed to hit its intended target, adding that no US personnel were harmed. Iranian state media and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the missiles struck the Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait and facilities linked to the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain—accounts that CENTCOM dismissed as “false.”

In what it described as self-defence aimed at safeguarding shipping lanes, the US subsequently struck Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites on Garuk and Qeshm Island, releasing video of the attacks. These exchanges form part of Operation Epic Fury, the US military campaign against Iran initiated in late February. By mid-May, the Pentagon had acknowledged losing 42 fixed-wing and rotary aircraft in the operation, including an Apache helicopter downed by an Iranian drone in early June. The latest helicopter crash, though not attributed to hostile fire, adds to the aviation toll and underscores the operational intensity in the region.

The helicopter involved was assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush, one of two US aircraft carriers that remain deployed in the Middle East. Viewed from Washington, the continued presence of carrier strike groups is essential to deterring Iranian threats to commercial and military navigation. Tehran, however, frames the US posture as a provocation and insists its retaliatory strikes are legitimate responses to American aggressions. With forces on high alert and both capitals trading warnings, the search suspension closes one chapter of the incident, but the broader military standoff shows no sign of abating.
