据空中交通管制录音，飞行员向管制员通报：“我们在转弯时撞上了一架无人机，它正好撞在驾驶舱上方。”飞行员未请求额外援助，并自行着陆。同日下午约4时05分，一架直升机飞行员报告在肯尼迪机场附近、约500英尺高度发现一架红白相间的遥控飞机，距机场关键导航点卡纳西（Canarsie）信标约1英里。FAA已向地方当局通报该起目击事件，目前尚不清楚两起事件是否关联。
FAA长期警告，在机场附近操作无人机属非法行为，可能危及飞行安全。该机构每月收到超过100起机场附近无人机目击报告，违规操作者可能面临高额罚款乃至监禁。此次事件发生前数日，一架联合航空（United Airlines）航班在邻近的纽瓦克自由国际机场下降时亦曾遭遇无人机。此外，正值2026年国际足联世界杯在美国11座城市举行，联邦调查局（FBI）同日表示，自赛事开始以来已在各主办城市限制空域内查获超过500架无人机。纽约与新泽西港务局未就肯尼迪机场事件置评。
