Two Explosions in Italy and Indonesia Leave Five Dead

A fireworks factory blast in central Italy and a mortar shell detonation in West Java killed five people, with investigations under way.

Two separate explosions on Wednesday killed five people in Italy and Indonesia, according to local authorities and emergency services.

In central Italy, a powerful explosion struck a production bunker at the Pirotecnica Mattei fireworks factory in Sant’Anatolia di Borgorose, in the province of Rieti, on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo. Firefighters recovered the bodies of two people from the rubble: a young man and a woman. Italian media identified them as Simone Colle, a 30-year-old worker at the plant, and his mother Teresa Tozzi, who collaborated with the company. Two other workers escaped unhurt. The same factory was the site of a fatal explosion in July 2023 that killed three members of the Colle family—Franco, Anna and Claudio Colle. The cause of Wednesday’s blast remains under investigation, though initial unofficial accounts cited by Italian news agencies suggest a fire may have ignited stored gunpowder, triggering a series of explosions.

In Indonesia, a mortar shell detonated in a residential area of Cipatat, West Bandung Regency, West Java, killing three people. West Java police said the explosion occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time at the home of one of the victims. The dead were identified as Ade, 21; Suhri, 40; and Rodiana, 40. Two died at the scene; the third succumbed to injuries in hospital. Local media reported that residents in the area routinely collected spent ammunition casings and projectiles from nearby military training grounds, though unexploded mortar rounds were not normally taken. Police have cordoned off the site and deployed bomb disposal teams to clear any remaining ordnance.

Authorities in both countries have opened investigations to determine the precise circumstances of the blasts. In Italy, the public prosecutor’s office in Rieti is examining the scene, while Indonesian police are questioning witnesses and awaiting a statement from the military. No further casualties have been reported.
