A Catholic priest in Mexico City has been ordered to remain in preventive detention after being charged with aggravated pederasty against a 17-year-old girl, while a teacher in the neighbouring State of Mexico faces similar proceedings for the alleged sexual abuse of a five-year-old boy. The detentions, announced in mid-July, are part of a broader pattern of child protection cases that have surfaced across the Americas in recent weeks, from a thwarted kidnapping in Portland, Oregon, to the rescue of four children in the Philippines linked to a Canadian suspect.

In the Mexican capital, the priest, identified only as Enrique ‘N’, was arrested on 9 July and linked to the criminal process on 14 July, according to the city’s attorney general’s office. Investigators say the case began after the victim’s mother discovered sexual conversations on her daughter’s phone with a contact saved as ‘Winnie Poo’. The Archdiocese of Mexico, however, stated it was not formally notified of the arrest by civil authorities and learned of the detention from the priest himself. It has opened an internal canonical investigation while insisting on the presumption of innocence. Separately, in Ixtapaluca, a teacher named Alfonso ‘N’ was also placed in preventive detention after a more than ten-hour hearing, accused of inappropriately touching a five-year-old at a private school. His defence lawyer argued that police logs would prove an irregular arrest, but the judge deemed the video evidence insufficient to halt the proceedings.

In the United States, a family visiting Portland from out of state intervened to stop a naked man who grabbed their seven-year-old daughter at a waterfront park on 12 July. Police arrested Daniel Vasey, 31, on charges including attempted kidnapping, but acknowledged that a staffing shortage delayed their response by an estimated 30 to 40 minutes. The Portland Police Bureau said only 41 patrol officers were on duty that night, with no reserve units available, as other officers were tied up at a barricaded suspect incident. The girl was not physically injured, authorities said.

International cooperation also led to charges against a 42-year-old man in Hamilton, Ontario, who now faces 136 counts related to the alleged livestreaming of child sexual abuse from the Philippines. Toronto police said the investigation, which began in April 2025, resulted in the rescue of four minors in the Philippines. In Brazil, police in the northern state of Roraima have indicted a pair of evangelical pastors, Wenderson Lima de Souza and Arielly Kamila Moraes de Souza, on suspicion of raping and sexually harassing at least six adolescents aged 12 to 17. Investigators say the couple exploited their religious authority to manipulate victims and discourage complaints. All cases remain under active investigation, with suspects in custody or facing court-imposed restrictions.
