Tonnes of Drugs and Millions of Illicit Cigarettes Seized in Global Sweep

From Mexican highways to an Italian port, authorities intercepted methamphetamine, cocaine, and contraband tobacco, arresting multiple suspects.

Law enforcement agencies across four continents have announced a string of major narcotics and contraband seizures over the past 48 hours, intercepting more than five tonnes of drugs and hundreds of thousands of illicit cigarettes. The operations, stretching from the highways of northern Mexico to an Italian port and a Brazilian backland, resulted in multiple arrests and the disruption of trafficking networks, according to official statements.

In Mexico, federal forces stopped a tractor-trailer on the Sonoyta–Puerto Peñasco highway in Sonora state after it was seen speeding and veering into oncoming traffic. A search revealed 60 sacks containing plastic containers with over three tonnes of methamphetamine hidden among cattle feed; the driver was detained. The shipment was destined for Tijuana, authorities said. Separately, customs officials at Mexico City’s international airport reported seizing more than 156 tonnes of illegal cigarettes and over 400 kg of various drugs from air cargo and passenger luggage between 2025 and 2026, alongside undeclared firearms components and 600 kg of liquid mercury. Further south, Argentine gendarmes in Salta province found almost 11 kg of cocaine concealed inside the chassis of a scooter during a routine road check, while in San Rafael, a stolen pickup truck yielded over a kilogram of cocaine and two cannabis cigarettes. In Brazil, civil police in Pernambuco state arrested three men and recovered three stolen vehicles, seizing 632 grams of cocaine, cash, and ammunition; a separate operation in São Paulo state netted a revolver, ammunition, and 50 portions of drugs from a man already known to police.

Across the Atlantic, Italian financial police in the port of Vado Ligure discovered roughly 770 kg of cocaine hidden in a refrigerated container of bananas that had arrived from Ecuador. The drug, described as extremely pure, was divided into 650 packages and could have fetched nearly €250 million on the street, investigators said. In Indonesia, customs and public order officers in Pekalongan, Central Java, seized 553,100 sticks of illegal cigarettes during an operation targeting un-taxed tobacco products. The goods, valued at over Rp 827 million, lacked the required excise stamps, and authorities estimated the state had been deprived of Rp 416 million in potential revenue.

The precise origins and intended distribution networks for many of the shipments remain under investigation. Mexican authorities have not disclosed the starting point of the methamphetamine-laden truck, and Italian officials are tracing the commercial shipping route from Ecuador to determine whether port workers or logistics companies were complicit. In Argentina, the two men detained in the stolen vehicle face charges under the country’s drug law, while the Brazilian operations are continuing to identify other suspects. All those arrested are awaiting judicial hearings, and no further details on potential links between the cases have been released.
