Russia Claims Capture of Kostiantynivka, Ukraine Denies as Fighting Rages

Moscow says its forces have seized the eastern Ukrainian city, a key transport and industrial hub, but Kyiv insists its troops still hold defensive lines.

Russia’s defence ministry announced on Friday that its forces had captured Kostiantynivka, a key city in eastern Ukraine, a claim Kyiv immediately rejected. President Vladimir Putin, briefed by Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, called the seizure a “major strategic achievement”. Gerasimov said the city, “one of the main defensive hubs of the enemy”, had been taken as part of the offensive to seize all of Donetsk. Ukraine’s General Staff denied the assertion, stating that units of the 19th Army Corps continued defensive operations inside the town. President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the claim as “another Russian lie” and challenged Putin to meet him there if it were truly under Russian control.

Kostiantynivka sits at the southern end of a fortified belt of four cities that forms the backbone of Ukraine’s defence of Donetsk. Western military analysts note that full control would give Russian forces a staging ground to push north along this defensive line, now the main axis of Moscow’s campaign. The city is also a key transport and industrial centre in the Donbas, a factor Putin himself underscored. Russia’s military has for some time claimed to hold parts of Kostiantynivka, and the defence ministry released images of soldiers raising flags amid ruins. Kyiv says small Russian infantry groups have infiltrated deep into Ukrainian formations and that counter-sabotage operations are under way.

The competing claims come amid an escalation in long-range strikes. Putin declared that “massive, coordinated strikes” against Ukraine’s military-industrial infrastructure must continue, two days after Moscow’s deadliest aerial attack on Kyiv this year killed at least three dozen people. Ukraine has intensified drone attacks on Russian energy facilities, hitting an oil terminal in St Petersburg and causing fuel shortages in multiple regions. Russian governors reported intercepting scores of drones, while Ukrainian officials said the strikes aimed to degrade revenue streams funding the war. Viewed from NATO capitals, the intensifying tit-for-tat has raised concerns about a widening conflict; Washington has warned Warsaw of a potential Russian “provocation” to test alliance resolve.

The battlefield situation around Kostiantynivka remains unverifiable. Russia’s Gerasimov also told Putin that forces were closing in on Lyman, 70 kilometres north, a town he described as strategically important for further advances. Ukraine’s military acknowledges a “difficult” situation but insists the city remains under its control. Diplomatic channels are blocked: Zelensky’s recent open letter proposing a direct meeting was rejected by the Kremlin, and US-brokered peace efforts have stalled. With both sides claiming momentum and no agreed verification mechanism, the fight for the Donetsk fortress belt is set to continue, and the fate of Kostiantynivka will likely be determined by the next phase of ground operations.
