Jenitar Na’amoana, 34, delivered naturally conceived identical quadruplet daughters at 28 weeks and four days gestation at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, an event Australian medical specialists described as a first for the country. The four girls—Emily, Harriet, Catherine and Alexa—share 100 per cent of their DNA after a single fertilised egg split into four embryos, a phenomenon clinicians estimate occurs in approximately one in 15 million pregnancies. The birth adds four siblings to a household that already includes four older children, creating a family of ten.

A large multidisciplinary team monitored the high-risk pregnancy from ten weeks’ gestation, with Na’amoana admitted as an inpatient at 25 weeks. The shared placenta elevated the risk of preterm birth, miscarriage and birth defects. Following an elective caesarean section, the mother experienced manageable blood loss and the neonates were transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit, where they continue to receive specialist care. The attending maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr Alexa Bendall—for whom one of the quadruplets is named—characterised the outcome as a privilege from both an academic and a human perspective.

The family’s sudden expansion created acute financial pressure, prompting a public fundraising campaign that raised over A$79,000, including an anonymous A$10,000 donation. However, the influx of funds rendered the household ineligible for government-funded private rental assistance under existing guidelines, and the Queensland Department of Housing withdrew the support. The family, living in a three-bedroom rental on Brisbane’s northside, had also been approved for social housing in June.

Housing Minister Sam O’Connor intervened after the case was raised with him, overriding the departmental decision on the grounds that the circumstances were unique and not contemplated by standard eligibility rules. He noted that discretion is exercised in such cases regularly, though this instance drew higher public attention. The family’s private rental tenure is secured until February, providing the state government time to identify appropriate long-term accommodation.
