Multiple Fatalities Across Four Nations as Road Crashes, Boat Sinking, and Hidden Graves Claim Lives

From Argentina to Italy, separate incidents on 18 June claimed lives in traffic accidents, a reservoir sinking, and the discovery of clandestine burial sites, with investigations underway in each case.

Separate fatal incidents across Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, and Italy on Thursday resulted in multiple deaths, injuries, and ongoing search operations, according to local authorities and emergency services. The events, unrelated but occurring within hours of each other, included road collisions, a reservoir capsizing, and the discovery of clandestine graves.

In Argentina’s Santa Fe province, two brothers aged 22 and 19 died when their car collided with a thermal truck on National Route 11 near the town of Berna. The provincial fire department reported that heavy rain had caused water accumulation on the road, leading the driver to lose control and cross into the opposite lane, where the car became trapped beneath the truck. Both occupants were ejected and declared dead at the scene. Investigators noted that the truck’s cabin was unoccupied when emergency crews arrived, a circumstance that remains under examination.

Mexican authorities confronted a series of separate emergencies. In the State of Mexico, a passenger bus bound for Zitácuaro veered off the Toluca-Zitácuaro highway in Almoloya de Juárez and fell approximately 20 metres into a ravine, leaving at least two dead and up to 13 injured, with rescue teams working to extract victims. On the Hidalgo–Querétaro border, a boat carrying nine people—exceeding its six-person capacity—capsized in the Zimapán reservoir; one woman was found dead, one survivor was rescued, and four others remained missing as dive teams searched the deep waters. In Nezahualcóyotl, state prosecutors confirmed that human remains discovered in a closet of a house belonged to Teresa Guadalupe Molina Hernández, 55, missing since April; her son, who had reported her disappearance, is in custody and now faces a feminicide charge. Separately, in the La Marquesa area near Mexico City, the discovery of four bodies in two clandestine graves—three men and one woman, all showing signs of violence—opened a new line in the search for two US citizens missing since 20 May, though authorities have not yet confirmed the identities. In the capital itself, a man was arrested and charged with the feminicide of his partner after a witness reported seeing him enter through a window and the victim’s ex-partner found her unconscious; she was pronounced dead by paramedics.

In Brazil’s Bahia state, a head-on collision between an ambulance returning from Itabuna and a private car on the BR-101 highway killed the car’s driver, aged 48, and a 63-year-old patient in the ambulance; five others were injured. In northern Italy, an 11-year-old boy cycling with friends in Reggio Emilia was struck and killed by a waste-collection truck; the mayor expressed condolences and said the circumstances were being investigated by local police.

Across all sites, judicial and police authorities continued evidence collection and witness interviews. Provisional casualty figures remained subject to revision as search operations, particularly at the Zimapán reservoir, extended into the night.
