Teenage gang rape reported in Brazil as sexual violence cases emerge across continents

Authorities in Brazil, Italy, Indonesia, and Mexico investigate separate incidents, from a drugging and assault to online image abuse and a metro safety scare.

A 17-year-old girl in Contagem, in Greater Belo Horizonte, Brazil, has reported being raped by four male adolescents during a gathering at her home, according to local police. The victim told investigators she suspects her drink was spiked, lost consciousness, and awoke to find two of the boys having non-consensual sex with her while a third watched. A fourth suspect later sent messages admitting participation, the police report states. All four are under 18, and the case is being handled under secrecy by the women’s police unit (Deam). The girl also received messages from the mother of one suspect urging her not to report the incident, authorities said.

In São Paulo, a separate assault at the Parada Inglesa metro station left a woman with fractures to her jaw, nose, and knee, and three broken teeth after a man punched and kicked her head. Security camera footage contradicted his claim of self-defence, showing the victims with their backs turned and no prior interaction; he was detained but later released, with the investigation ongoing. In the same city, a 32-year-old man, William da Silva Santana, was arrested for the rape of a 17-year-old near Tatuapé metro station in May. A second victim, aged 25, recognised him as the perpetrator of an earlier rape in April, and he has confessed to both crimes, police said. CCTV recordings showed him stalking the teenager before leading her to a dead-end street.

In Italy, a 55-year-old man is on trial in the Reggio Emilia area, accused of taking bikini photographs from the Instagram accounts of nine young women—then aged 17 to 22—and posting them on a pornographic website, where he created dedicated folders. Four of the women testified this week; the judge has requested testimony from postal police to clarify how the suspect’s identity was traced. In Indonesia, a student at Semarang State University (Unnes) is under police investigation for alleged verbal sexual harassment against three fellow students. Electronic evidence, including chat messages, is being collected, and one victim has been formally questioned, according to local police.

Unrelated to the criminal cases, a visually impaired passenger’s support cane accidentally fell onto the tracks at Zaragoza station on Line 1 of the Mexico City Metro, triggering an electric arc and a brief service suspension. No injuries were reported, and the transport authority reminded users to secure belongings near the platform edge.

All investigations remain active. The Brazilian gang-rape inquiry is under judicial secrecy and could lead to infractional proceedings under the country’s Child and Adolescent Statute. The São Paulo assault and rape cases are being handled by specialised police units. The Italian trial continues, and Indonesian police are urging other potential victims to come forward.
