Mbappé penalty edges France past Paraguay in fractious World Cup tie
A single spot-kick settled a bruising last-16 encounter in Philadelphia, after which a Paraguayan senator’s racist tirade drew a sharp rebuke from the French government.
France advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia, a match decided by Kylian Mbappé’s 70th-minute penalty and defined by persistent physical confrontations. The France captain converted from the spot after a foul inside the area, taking his tournament tally to seven goals and his career World Cup total to 19, one behind the all-time record held by Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
From the opening whistle, Paraguay sought to disrupt with aggressive marking and late challenges. Defender Juan Cáceres later told Paraguayan television that Mbappé, while being tightly marked, asked him: “Do you want to kiss me?” Cáceres, who upended the forward near the corner flag late on, replied: “Well, since we’re here, why not?” Matías Galarza struck Mbappé during play and escaped a card; he wept in the interview zone after the elimination. At the final whistle, goalkeeper Orlando Gill extended a hand to Mbappé, but the Frenchman continued celebrating with team-mates. Gill then threw a ball at his back.
Mbappé addressed the tone of the contest directly. “They thought we would come to play in tuxedos and produce pretty moves,” he said. “If we have to get our hands dirty, we will. In dirty football we were better.” France coach Didier Deschamps noted his players had kept their composure, adding that Germany had fallen into a similar trap earlier in the tournament.
The aftermath spilled beyond the pitch. In Asunción, senator Celeste Amarilla posted a series of messages on X describing Mbappé as a “colonised Cameroonian stubbornly pretending to be French,” “arrogant and newly rich,” and “ugly.” She wrote that he “drank coconut milk instead of mother’s milk” and that “the most educated beings he heard were chimpanzees.” In Paris, sports minister Marina Ferrari said she was “absolutely scandalised” by the “abject and racist” remarks, declaring that France would not remain silent and that attacking Mbappé meant attacking “liberty, equality and fraternity.” In Buenos Aires, television host Moria Casán criticised Mbappé for refusing Gill’s handshake, calling him “rude” and contrasting his conduct with what she described as Messi’s sense of fair play. In London, former England goalkeeper Joe Hart labelled Paraguay’s approach “disgusting” and said he would have “ripped the shirt off” the defender who tried to damage the penalty spot.
France will face Morocco in the quarter-finals on 9 July in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The fixture revives the semi-final pairing from Qatar 2022, when the French side ended Morocco’s historic run.
