The France captain converted from the spot after a foul inside the area, taking his tournament tally to seven goals and his career World Cup total to 19, one behind the all-time record held by Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

From the opening whistle, Paraguay sought to disrupt with aggressive marking and late challenges. Defender Juan Cáceres later told Paraguayan television that Mbappé, while being tightly marked, asked him: “Do you want to kiss me?” Cáceres, who upended the forward near the corner flag late on, replied: “Well, since we’re here, why not?” Matías Galarza struck Mbappé during play and escaped a card; he wept in the interview zone after the elimination.
