Jail Hostage Crisis in North Carolina, Guard Surrender in Canada, and Prison Disturbances in Argentina

Inmates took two guards captive in a North Carolina detention centre, while a former Canadian prison officer turned herself in and an Argentine prison saw a brief riot after an escape.

Inmates at a regional jail in eastern North Carolina overpowered correctional staff and seized control of parts of the facility early Monday, taking two guards hostage before order was restored hours later. According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the takeover began around 5 a.m. at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in Windsor, where three guards were overseeing 88 inmates. One guard escaped, while the other two were held captive. Local, state, and federal authorities established a perimeter and began negotiations, and by 9:30 a.m. the two captive guards and 18 inmates were released without further injury. The remaining inmates were subsequently removed, and by early afternoon the facility was cleared. The sheriff’s office confirmed all staff and inmates were accounted for, with some receiving medical treatment for injuries. Authorities have not yet disclosed what triggered the incident or why only three guards were on duty.

In British Columbia, a former corrections officer at the North Fraser Pretrial Centre turned herself in to police on Monday after a warrant was issued for her arrest last month. Naila Sheikh faces charges of identity fraud, breach of trust, and unauthorized use of a computer. Canadian media report she was the case manager for convicted killer Rabih Alkhalil, who escaped from the same facility in July 2022 with the help of two men posing as contractors. Alkhalil was later arrested in Qatar in September 2025 and remains overseas, as Canada has no extradition treaty with that country. Sheikh’s lawyer stated he has not yet received any evidence from prosecutors and cannot comment on whether the charges are linked to Alkhalil’s escape.

Separately, on Vancouver Island, an inmate who escaped from William Head Institution in Metchosin was found dead near the shoreline on Monday. West Shore RCMP said 69-year-old Ernest Jensen, serving a life sentence for second-degree murder since 1991, was reported missing during a midday count on 28 June. His body was recovered by marine services and the local fire department. An investigation into the circumstances of his death is being conducted by the RCMP, Correctional Services Canada, and the British Columbia Coroners Office.

In Argentina, a prison escape in Baradero, Buenos Aires province, triggered disturbances inside the facility on Sunday. Two inmates, aged 28 and 31, fled the Unidad Penal N°11 and were recaptured hours later hiding in a field, according to local authorities. Upon their return, other detainees climbed onto the roofs of cell blocks, prompting a response from the prison’s tactical unit and the penitentiary service. The situation was brought under control without reported injuries. The escape is being investigated by the local prosecutor’s office and a guarantees court.
