Infants Die in Separate Incidents in US, Argentina, Brazil, and Germany
Authorities in Mississippi, Luján de Cuyo, Araçatuba, and Ludwigsburg are probing the deaths of four babies, each under distinct circumstances, as forensic work continues.
A one-year-old boy was shot dead by police in Mississippi on Sunday, while three other infants have died in separate, unrelated incidents in Argentina, Brazil, and Germany over the past week, according to authorities in each jurisdiction.
In Senatobia, Mississippi, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation stated that officers responding to a reported shoplifting at a Walmart encountered two adults and a child fleeing in a car. When the driver accelerated towards the officers, one opened fire, striking the vehicle. The car later arrived at a local hospital where one-year-old Kohen Wiley was pronounced dead. The officer involved has been suspended pending the inquiry; the county medical examiner has not disclosed a cause of death. Local protests erupted, with police deploying tear gas to disperse crowds, and a social media campaign under the hashtag #JusticeForKohen has gained traction.
In Argentina, a two-month-old boy was found not breathing by his mother at their home in the San José settlement in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza province, on Saturday morning. Police attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation before transferring the infant to a health centre, where doctors confirmed his death, according to the Luján de Cuyo prosecutor’s office. The case has been preliminarily classified as ‘death investigation’ pending forensic results. In Brazil, a newborn girl died on Saturday after a planned home birth in Araçatuba, São Paulo state, local police reported. The infant displayed purple colouration and did not cry; the mother, who has previously given birth at home five times without complications, began resuscitation efforts while paramedics were summoned. The child was rushed to hospital but did not survive. The case is registered as a suspicious or accidental death, with an autopsy underway.
In Germany, a three-month-old baby was found dead on Friday near the Rankbach stream in Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, two days after being taken from his pram outside the family home, according to police. The mother had momentarily turned away while carrying shopping bags; when she looked back, the pram was empty. A large-scale search involving helicopters, drones, and tracking dogs led to the discovery of an infant’s body. Authorities have not yet formally confirmed the identity but stated it ‘could be the missing child,’ and are withholding the cause of death as the criminal investigation proceeds.
In all four cases, investigators have stressed that examinations and forensic analyses are ongoing, and no definitive conclusions have been reached. Official sources have released only limited information, citing the need to preserve the integrity of the inquiries.
