Ferrari revives the manual gearbox — by wire — as Iranian car prices underscore global market divides

A limited-run 12Cilindri Manuale pairs a V12 with a simulated stick shift for purists, while free-market price data from Tehran reveals steep inflation for mass-market models.

Ferrari has introduced the 12Cilindri Manuale, a 1,499-unit special series that reinterprets the traditional manual gearbox through a “Manuale by-wire” system, marking a direct response to the mixed reception of its first fully electric model, the Luce. Priced from €590,000 in Italy, the front-engined grand tourer combines an 830-horsepower naturally aspirated V12 with a three-pedal setup and a gated shift lever, yet retains the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission underneath. The move, viewed from Maranello, aims to recapture loyal buyers who seek a more physical connection to the car’s heritage, after the Luce’s unconventional styling and electric powertrain drew widespread online criticism and tepid enthusiasm from some traditionalists.

The technical heart of the project is a by-wire architecture that translates the driver’s lever and clutch-pedal inputs into electronic commands for the dual-clutch gearbox. A compact lever module with dedicated sensors and machined components recreates the mechanical loads and tactile feedback of classic Ferrari manual shifts, including a physical lockout that prevents an engagement if the clutch is not depressed or engine revs are mismatched. The clutch pedal itself uses a passive mechanical system to mimic the load-travel curve of a conventional linkage, while the steering-wheel paddles have been removed to reinforce the analogue ritual. The car can be driven in manual mode for the first six gears and reverse, or switched to fully automatic operation.

Ferrari’s emphasis on experiential luxury contrasts with the pressures visible in mass-market segments. In Iran, free-market price data published on 3 July show domestically produced models such as the Peugeot 207 automatic reaching 2.35 billion rials and the Shahin G CVT at 2.11 billion rials, reflecting sustained inflationary trends and affordability constraints for ordinary buyers. The divergence is underscored by the broader transmission landscape: as Renault experts note, sequential gearboxes — common in motorcycles and performance cars — require ordered gear changes, while continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) use pulleys and belts to simulate stepped ratios, with each type carrying distinct maintenance risks, from false neutrals in sequential units to belt wear in CVTs.

Ferrari has stated that electric models will account for only 20 percent of its lineup by 2030, with the remainder split equally between pure-combustion and hybrid cars. First deliveries of the 12Cilindri Manuale are scheduled for the first quarter of next year. The next factual milestone will be the initial customer handovers, which will test whether the by-wire manual can satisfy the purist demand it was designed to capture.
