Kotoko Hand Reins to Tinkler as Kenya Motorsport Elects New Leaders

Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko appoint Eric Tinkler as head coach, while Kenya’s motorsport federation elects its first office bearers and Nigeria’s Michael Eric plans a Lagos youth camp.

Asante Kotoko have moved to reshape their technical leadership by naming the former South Africa captain Eric Tinkler as head coach with immediate effect. The appointment, confirmed by the Kumasi-based club on Friday, places a coach with a CAF A Licence and more than three decades in elite football at the helm of one of Ghana’s most decorated sides. Tinkler, who earned 48 caps for Bafana Bafana and captained the team at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, arrives after managerial stints at Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and Cape Town City. His continental record includes guiding Pirates to the final of the CAF Champions League and taking SuperSport to the CAF Confederation Cup decider.

Kotoko’s board chairman, James Osei Brown, described the appointment as a move to harness “experience, discipline, and winning pedigree” as the Porcupine Warriors target domestic and continental success. Tinkler will work alongside the club’s director of football, Stanley Menzo Purl, in a structure the club says is designed for long-term competitiveness. The coach himself noted the “rich history” and “ambition for development” at Kotoko, pledging to build a side capable of competing on multiple fronts. The announcement comes as the Ghana Premier League club prepares for the 2026/27 season, with expectations in Kumasi that the new technical team can deliver silverware.

In Nairobi, Kenya’s motorsport community turned a historic page with the inaugural election of the Motorsport Kenya Federation (MKF), the newly constituted national governing body. Altaf Ganatra was elected president for a four-year term, deputised by veteran rally driver Carl Tundo. Erick Bengi took the role of secretary general and Sangita Gohil that of treasurer. The poll, overseen by the Sports Registrar, formally establishes MKF as the Autorité Sportive Nationale, responsible for licensing, safety standards, event sanctioning and the country’s relationship with global motorsport bodies. Ganatra said the federation would focus on building durable structures and youth development, while Tundo hailed the election as a milestone that gives the next generation a clear system.

Meanwhile, in Lagos, D’Tigers assistant captain Michael Eric announced that his Erico Sports Legacy Foundation will hold a Top 50 elite basketball camp on 24 July. The camp, funded solely by Eric and now in its fifth year, will bring together 50 young players and their coaches for drills, mentorship and the distribution of kit. Eric, who played at Temple University and was signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers, said the initiative was born from a desire to create opportunities for Nigerian youths who lack access to similar platforms. Programme director Gbenga Jetawo noted that the foundation has trained over 1,000 children, with some progressing to scholarships abroad.

Viewed from Mexico City, the appointment of Hernán Crespo as head coach of Atlas FC signals a parallel ambition in Liga MX. The Argentine, who won the Copa Sudamericana with Defensa y Justicia and the AFC Champions League with Al Ain, replaces Diego Cocca and will make his league debut against Monterrey on 1 August. The move is part of a wider restructuring led by the club’s ownership group, with the aim of building a team with a defined playing identity and long-term competitiveness.
