Corporate Leaders Elevate Human Skills as AI Reshapes Workplace Demands

From fashion CFOs to Nigerian HR forums, executives are prioritising emotional intelligence, trust, and ecosystem thinking as technology alone proves insufficient.

The Global Fashion Agenda’s latest report, drafted with Boston Consulting Group, places chief financial officers at the centre of sustainability strategy, marking a shift from discretionary corporate social responsibility to non-discretionary cost management. The CFO Agenda, launched at the Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen, categorises companies by sustainability integration maturity and finds that while most CFOs rate sustainability as critical, few have embedded it into financial metrics. This development signals that soft skills—collaboration, long-term strategic thinking, and stakeholder influence—are becoming financially material.

The limits of artificial intelligence underscore why such human capabilities are gaining value. Harvard Business School researchers identify emotional intelligence, empathetic listening, decision-making under uncertainty, and creativity as skills that machines cannot replicate. Psychologists in Indonesia note that gadgets cannot replace the sense of belonging, trust built through real interaction, or the nonverbal cues that convey most meaning in communication. These findings align with a broader recognition that technology accelerates tasks but does not forge the relationships that underpin organisational resilience.

In Nigeria, human resource leaders at a Chartered Institute of Personnel Management forum in Lagos called for companies to move beyond policy statements and measure the business impact of diversity and inclusion. They argued that inclusion must be a strategic issue, with executives accountable for creating cultures where diverse voices influence decisions. Similarly, Ghanaian CEO advisors are urging chief executives to map ecosystem stakeholders and strengthen relationships beyond organisational boundaries, viewing influence and collaboration as core leadership competencies in a connected economy.

The fashion industry’s CFO agenda reflects this convergence. The report urges finance chiefs to become “architects of a fundamental reallocation of capital” toward sustainable supply chains, a role that demands the very skills—trust-building, cross-functional collaboration, and navigating uncertainty—that technology cannot provide. The next factual milestone is the planned inclusion of manufacturer CFOs in future editions of the report, which will extend the scrutiny of soft-skill integration deeper into global supply chains.
