Co-hosts USA march into last 32 as Brazil rediscover scoring touch
USA down Australia 2-0 to book knockout place, while Brazil’s 3-0 win over Haiti eliminates the Caribbean side and sets up decisive final group fixtures.
Hosts USA secured progression to the World Cup knockout phase with a game to spare, overwhelming a lethargic Australia 2-0 in Seattle. An own goal by Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute gave the co-hosts an early advantage, and Alex Freeman’s header just before half-time settled a comfortable win. Without injured talisman Christian Pulisic, coach Mauricio Pochettino deployed a 4-4-2 that kept the Americans lively and dominant, especially down the flanks. Australia, who had surprisingly dropped the goalscorers from their opening victory over Turkey, were toothless; coach Tony Popovic later conceded his side were “slow to every ball” and “flat and lethargic”. The result moved the USA to six points in Group D, and Paraguay’s subsequent 1-0 win over Turkey later confirmed them as group winners.
The Paraguay victory in Santa Clara, sealed by Matias Galarza’s strike after 63 seconds, also produced a tournament first: Miguel Almirón was sent off for covering his mouth while confronting an opponent, triggering a new FIFA rule designed to tackle racism. Turkey, returning to the finals after a 24-year absence, exit without a point. The Americans, already assured of first place, will face Turkey in a dead-rubber final group match.
In Group C, Brazil found the commanding performance their campaign demanded, dispatching Haiti 3-0 in Philadelphia. Matheus Cunha struck twice for the five-time champions and Vinícius Júnior added a third in first-half stoppage time, lifting the Seleção to four points and top of the group on goal difference ahead of Morocco. Haiti, beaten in both their matches, became the first side mathematically eliminated. The victory was tempered by an apparent injury to Raphinha, who limped off before the interval after a seemingly innocuous tussle; coach Carlo Ancelotti described only a “complete match” that showed greater effectiveness in attack and control at the back.
Morocco kept pace with Brazil after a 1-0 win over Scotland in Foxborough, Ismael Saibari’s goal inside two minutes proving decisive. The result leaves the North Africans level on points with Brazil, while Scotland sit on three. The group remains finely balanced: Morocco face Haiti and Scotland meet Brazil in the final round on 24 June, with three teams still capable of advancing. Scotland’s John McGinn noted that Brazil “play with less structure but have quality that can hurt you at any point”.
The day’s results underscored the co-hosts’ smooth early progress, following Mexico’s qualification 24 hours earlier, while exposing the harsh realities of the group stage for Haiti and Turkey. All eyes now turn to the Group C deciders, where Brazil will seek to avoid a nervy conclusion against a Scotland side that must win to have any hope of joining the tournament’s two host nations in the last 32.
