Priest Arrested for Rape in Mexico; Indonesian Teacher Suspended; Assault Probes in Jakarta and Sweden

A Catholic priest faces aggravated rape charges in Guerrero; Indonesian authorities suspend a teacher accused of harassment and probe a schoolgirl rape; Swedish police detain a violent drunk.

Authorities in Mexico, Indonesia and Sweden have reported a series of unconnected incidents involving alleged sexual assault and public violence over the past several days, with charges ranging from the aggravated rape of a minor by a priest to a drunken assault at a campground.

In Mexico’s Guerrero state, prosecutors announced the arrest of Catholic priest Nicolás “N” on 20 June, charging him with the aggravated rape of a 16-year-old girl. The assault allegedly took place during catechism classes last November at a parish in Coyuca de Benítez. The priest was detained outside a seminary in Acapulco with the support of federal forces. State law mandates harsher sentences for sexual crimes committed by members of the clergy, and the investigation is proceeding with a gender-sensitive approach, according to authorities.

In Indonesia’s Central Java, the Sukoharjo education agency has temporarily suspended a primary school teacher after video footage circulated showing him allegedly recording under a female promotional worker’s skirt in a Solo mall. The victim, identified as C, reported the incident but, per press reports, lost her job afterwards. Several parents have withdrawn their children’s enrolment from the school, citing safety concerns. The teacher, a government contract worker, has engaged a lawyer; the victim’s refusal to mediate means the criminal complaint proceeds.

Separately, East Jakarta police are questioning a man accused of raping a 9-year-old neighbour during Friday prayers on 19 June. Video from the scene showed the suspect, dressed in green, perched on a rooftop as residents surrounded the house. Unverified witness accounts claim he admitted to previous assaults. He was eventually detained and handed over to authorities; formal charges are pending.

In Sweden, police in the coastal town of Arkösund responded early Sunday to reports of a drunken man in his 40s threatening and assaulting people at a camping site. The man fled into a forest but was located and taken to sober up. He is suspected of assault and illegal threats but was not arrested; prosecutors have yet to decide on charges.

All investigations remain ongoing, with judicial decisions awaited in each case.
