The body of a 17-year-old Thai girl was found inside a black suitcase abandoned near a railway track in the coastal resort city of Pattaya on Friday, prompting Thai police to detain a 46-year-old Australian man at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport later that evening. Immigration officers intercepted the suspect as he was attempting to purchase a ticket for a flight to Perth, according to local authorities.

CCTV footage, cited by Thai police and local media, shows the man and the teenager entering a condominium in Pattaya in the early hours of Thursday morning. Several hours later, the same man was recorded leaving the building carrying a large black suitcase, which he then transported on the back of a motorbike. Police traced the route and recovered the suitcase approximately 4.2 kilometres from the apartment; inside they found the victim’s naked body, curled up and covered with a thin brown cloth, bearing what officials described as signs of violence.

What the suspect told investigators remains a point of divergence in early reporting. Some Thai police briefings, relayed by local media, indicate the man initially denied any involvement in the alleged abduction and murder. However, other accounts, including those cited by Brazilian and Australian outlets, suggest that after questioning he provided information that led officers to the suitcase and later confessed to a physical altercation, claiming he acted in self-defence when the girl allegedly demanded money and reached for a knife. Police have not yet filed formal charges, stating they are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination and other evidence. Potential charges include child abduction, murder, concealing a corpse, and abduction of a minor for sexual purposes.

Last month, the government sharply reduced the length of visa-free stays for tourists following a series of high-profile arrests of foreigners for drug offences, sex trafficking, and operating unlicensed businesses.
