Argentina Vigilante Beating, Latin American Shootings, and Temple Thefts in Israel and India
A suspected motorbike thief was beaten by residents in Neuquén, while armed attacks in Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia wounded at least three, and burglars targeted synagogues and temples in Israel and India.
A man suspected of attempting to steal a motorbike in the Argentine city of Centenario was beaten by a group of residents and later hospitalised under police guard, one of a series of violent incidents reported across Latin America, the Middle East and South Asia over the weekend. In separate armed attacks in Mexico and Colombia, at least three people were wounded, while a jewellery store in Brazil was robbed at gunpoint and places of worship in Israel and India were burgled.
In Neuquén province, local media reported that two men tried to steal a parked motorbike on Perú Street on Saturday. Neighbours and shopkeepers intervened; one suspect escaped on a motorbike, but the other was caught, knocked to the ground and beaten. Witnesses said the man, found carrying a bolt cutter and a helmet, begged his attackers to stop. Police from Comisaría 52 arrived and took the injured suspect to Natalio Burd Hospital under custody. The motorbike owner thanked residents for preventing the theft. The episode came a day after another violent assault nearby, intensifying local demands for greater security.
In Mexico, municipal authorities in Naucalpan reported that two people were wounded on Sunday night when gunmen on a motorbike opened fire on a group drinking in the street in the Ahuizotla neighbourhood. At least ten shell casings were recovered; no arrests have been made. In Cúcuta, Colombia, police said a minor was injured on Saturday when two helmeted men robbed a shop in the Popular district, stealing gold jewellery and firing a shot that shattered glass, wounding the girl’s hand. In Curitiba, Brazil, military police released an image of a suspect fleeing through a shopping centre after two armed men robbed a jewellery store on Monday afternoon. Shots were fired inside the mall, but no injuries were reported. A police cordon was set up in the central Batel district, and the shopping centre said it was cooperating with investigators.
In Israel, police in Bnei Brak recovered silver ritual objects worth 120,000 shekels (£25,000) stolen in a sophisticated break-in at a synagogue of the Tshernobyl Hasidic dynasty. Investigators said the masked burglars used specialised tools to avoid leaving fingerprints and appeared to have inside knowledge, heading directly to the rabbi’s private room. The items were found hidden, and police are examining a possible link to suspicious individuals seen near the synagogue the previous Saturday. In Karnal, India, more than 100,000 rupees (£950) was taken from a donation box at the Khatu Shyam Temple; CCTV showed two suspects, and a forensic team visited the scene. No arrests have been reported in either case.
Investigations remain active in all cases, with authorities reviewing security footage and appealing for information.
