The killing of Maria Barrios Ventura, a Guatemalan national, left her infant facing an uncertain future, her family said. The same weekend, across the Americas, other women died violently: in Rosario, Argentina, a 20-year-old woman was found dead from a gunshot wound to the chin, and her boyfriend later surrendered to authorities, local prosecutors reported. In the northeastern Argentine province of Misiones, a 40-year-old woman was discovered shot dead in her home and her partner was found hanged in an outbuilding; investigators are treating the case as a suspected femicide followed by suicide, pending autopsies. In southern Brazil, a man was formally charged with the femicide of a 21-year-old woman shot in the head in her apartment in Lajeado, according to the Rio Grande do Sul state prosecution service.

In Mexico, the weekend brought fresh discoveries of human remains by collectives of women searching for disappeared relatives. In Culiacán, Sinaloa, members of the group Madres en Lucha por tu Regreso a Casa located unidentified remains in a rural area near El Quemadito, state authorities confirmed. The remains were transferred to the forensic medical service for anthropological and genetic analysis. Further north in Baja California Sur, six bone fragments were found during a search operation in Comondú, the state prosecutor’s office said, adding that 16 unidentified bodies in the municipality await DNA comparison due to a lack of family reference samples. Separately, a couple was found dead in a home in Laguna de San Ignacio, Baja California Sur; preliminary lines of inquiry point to possible intoxication from gases emitted by a power generator, though investigations continue. In a distinct operation, naval and special forces personnel arrested four people and seized nine firearms, ammunition and tactical gear in Culiacán and Escuinapa, Sinaloa, highlighting the armed violence that has marked the region in recent years.

Many of the cases remain unresolved. Los Angeles homicide detectives have no information on suspects and do not know whether Barrios Ventura was the intended target. In Rosario, the suspect has not yet been formally charged, and no firearm was recovered at the scene. The Misiones deaths await full autopsy results to confirm the preliminary findings. In Brazil, prosecutors have requested additional forensic reports and cellphone data. Across Mexico, the identification of remains hinges on the willingness of families to provide DNA samples; a collection drive is scheduled for early August in Comondú. All investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not released final determinations in any of the cases.
