A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, during an enforcement operation in Houston, Texas, on the morning of July 7, 2026. The shooting occurred around 6:50 a.m. local time near the intersection of Canal Street and Wayside Drive in the Magnolia Park neighborhood, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

DHS stated that agents were attempting to arrest Araujo, whom they described as an undocumented immigrant, when he allegedly rammed an ICE vehicle, refused verbal commands, and attempted to run over an agent. The agent then fired in self-defense, striking Araujo. Paramedics transported him to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Houston Fire Department.

The victim's son, Ronaldo Salgado, told Telemundo Houston that his father was in the area to hire day laborers for construction work, not to evade arrest. A security camera video reviewed by Reuters shows a person lying next to a white pickup truck surrounded by agents after the incident, but does not capture the shooting itself. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia have called for an independent investigation, citing past cases where initial official narratives were later contradicted by video evidence.

The FBI's Houston field office is investigating a potential assault on a federal officer, while the DHS Office of Inspector General is also involved. Houston police confirmed they did not participate in the operation. The incident adds to a series of fatal encounters involving ICE agents; according to Mexican government tallies cited by Infobae México, at least 16 Mexican nationals have died in ICE custody or during operations since the start of the second Trump administration. The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been filed.
