Chelsea completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on Tuesday, finalising a British-record transfer that reshapes the summer market. The 23-year-old forward put pen to paper on a contract running until 2033, with the fee reported at £117 million—surpassing the £116 million Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this month. Rogers, who had been a long-standing target for Arsenal, chose Stamford Bridge after the Gunners declined to meet Villa’s valuation, and he cited the project under new manager Xabi Alonso as decisive. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid,” Rogers said in a club statement.

Rogers arrives in west London after a stellar two-year spell at Villa Park, where he directly contributed to 40 Premier League goals in 85 appearances. His 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions last season helped Unai Emery’s side secure a top-four finish and lift the UEFA Europa League trophy, with Rogers scoring in the final against Freiburg. At international level, he has earned 22 caps for England since debuting in November 2024 and featured prominently in the 2026 World Cup, starting the semi-final defeat to Argentina and playing in the third-place victory over France.

The move signals a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy under the BlueCo ownership, moving beyond exclusively signing young, unproven talents to acquiring established Premier League performers. Alonso, appointed this summer, is tasked with reviving a team that finished 10th last season and failed to qualify for Europe. Rogers’ versatility—capable of playing across the attacking line and as a No. 8—offers the Spaniard a dynamic option alongside Cole Palmer, with whom Rogers shares a close friendship and the ‘cold’ celebration that originated during his Middlesbrough days.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, are already moving to fill the void, with reports from Argentina and Spain indicating that Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho is in advanced talks to join on loan with an obligation to buy. The deal would reunite Garnacho with compatriots Emiliano Martínez and Emiliano Buendía at Villa Park. Middlesbrough, Rogers’ former club, stand to benefit from a 20 per cent sell-on clause, receiving a significant windfall from the record-breaking transfer.
