Woman, 25, stabbed to death in Córdoba; ex-partner with prior violence conviction arrested

Rocío Gómez was killed early Monday in Santa María de Punilla; the suspect, who had a conditional sentence for family violence, was detained after confessing to a neighbour.

A 25-year-old mother of three was stabbed to death in the early hours of Monday in the town of Santa María de Punilla, Córdoba province, according to local prosecutors. The victim, Rocío Belén Gómez, was attacked inside a family home after a gathering to watch a football match, authorities said. Her former partner, Maximiliano Braudaco, was arrested a short distance away following a police cordon operation.

Investigators from the Cosquín prosecutor’s office said the pair had spent the evening together before a dispute escalated into physical violence. Gómez’s mother, who was present, attempted to intervene but was unable to stop the assault; she later found her daughter lying in the street with multiple knife wounds. Braudaco fled on foot and, while still bloodied, told a neighbour, “I stabbed Rocío,” according to witness accounts cited by local media. He was detained within hours.

Court records show Braudaco was serving a conditional prison sentence for a prior family violence conviction, stemming from a complaint filed by Gómez’s mother. A restraining order was in place, yet relatives told Argentine outlets that he continued to visit the home and that the victim had not reported the breaches. Some reports give Gómez’s age as 27, and the suspect’s age is variously listed as 40 or 42; authorities have not yet clarified the discrepancies.

The case has been classified as a femicide—homicide aggravated by gender—under Argentina’s penal code, which carries a mandatory life sentence. The three children are temporarily in the care of a neighbour. The investigation remains open, and no formal plea has been entered.
