Wildfire North of Madrid Scorches 13,000 Hectares, Forces Evacuations
Firefighters battle a blaze in Guadalajara province as another fire in Zaragoza shows signs of containment, amid Spain’s third heatwave this summer.
A large wildfire burning since Thursday approximately 100 kilometres north of Madrid has consumed an estimated 13,000 hectares of forest and scrubland, according to the regional fire service in Castilla-La Mancha. The blaze, which broke out near the village of La Mierla in Guadalajara province, has prompted the preventive evacuation of some 700 residents from more than 20 municipalities. Local authorities reported no casualties from this fire.
More than 500 firefighters and emergency personnel are on the ground, supported by 25 water-dropping aircraft, the regional government said. Military emergency units have been deployed to create firebreaks. The flames have entered the Sierra Norte Natural Park, a protected area that hosts endangered species including eagles, wolves and butterflies. Regional president Emiliano García-Page described the fire as “difficult” and noted that crews have so far kept the flames away from populated areas.
In the northeastern Aragon region, a separate wildfire that ignited on Wednesday near Zaragoza has burned approximately 14,400 hectares, according to regional authorities, slightly below earlier estimates of 16,000 hectares. More than 1,100 people were evacuated, though officials said on Sunday that the fire was largely contained after several days of intense effort. “After extremely trying days, this fire is finally showing a clearly favourable trend,” Aragon president Jorge Azcón said, though firefighting aircraft remain deployed amid shifting winds.
The blazes come less than two weeks after one of the deadliest wildfires in recent Spanish history killed 13 people and destroyed 7,000 hectares in the southern province of Almería. Spain is bracing for its third heatwave of the season, with temperatures forecast to exceed 40°C across much of the country from Tuesday, and possibly reaching 45°C in isolated inland areas, according to the national weather agency. Scientists attribute the increasing intensity and frequency of heatwaves to human-driven climate change, which dries out vegetation and elevates wildfire risk. Data from the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis) indicates that more than 80,000 hectares have burned in Spain since the start of the year, nearly double the area consumed in the same period last year.
