The newly installed Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal has moved to dismantle two of the previous Trinamool Congress administration’s most visible symbolic markers, replacing them with initiatives tied to the central government’s welfare agenda and a rival historical narrative. On 20 June, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation notified that Suhrawardy Avenue, a road in the Park Circus area, would henceforth be known as Gopal Mukherjee Road. Six weeks later, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that 16 August—observed by the TMC since 2021 as ‘Khela Hobey Divas’ to mark its election victory and promote sports—would be redesignated ‘Ayushman Divas’, celebrating the Union government’s public health insurance scheme. The date also marks the completion of the BJP government’s first 100 days in office.

According to the municipal notification, the renaming honours Gopal Mukherjee, a north Kolkata meat-shop owner credited by Hindu nationalist circles with saving Hindus during the 1946 communal violence. The street previously bore the name of Sir Hassan Suhrawardy, a two-time vice-chancellor of the University of Calcutta and a Muslim medical figure knighted for saving the life of the then Governor of Bengal. Historical records cited by Kolkata-based researchers indicate the road was named after Sir Hassan in 1933, not after his nephew Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the Muslim League leader who served as the last premier of undivided Bengal and later as prime minister of Pakistan. The BJP government, however, has explicitly linked the renaming to the younger Suhrawardy, whom Chief Minister Adhikari accused of “orchestrating the massacre of innocent citizens” during the Great Calcutta Killings.

Viewed from the state’s political landscape, the twin decisions represent a systematic effort to overwrite the TMC’s cultural and electoral legacy with a narrative centred on Hindu victimhood and central welfare delivery. The TMC had framed ‘Khela Hobey Divas’ as a youth sports initiative, though the slogan itself became associated with political violence during the party’s tenure. The BJP’s choice of 16 August for ‘Ayushman Divas’ directly invokes Direct Action Day, the 1946 League-sponsored hartal that spiralled into days of communal bloodshed leaving an estimated 4,000 dead and tens of thousands displaced. Adhikari described the date as a “black day in Kolkata’s history” and said the new observance would extend health coverage to citizens over 70 and eventually to 70 per cent of the population under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, with the remainder covered by a state-level insurance plan.

Analysts in Kolkata note that the street renaming and the calendar change are unfolding alongside a broader BJP campaign to foreground figures such as Gopal Mukherjee ahead of the 2026 assembly election. The government has also begun verifying beneficiaries of the Annapurna Yojna cash-transfer scheme, which replaced the TMC’s Lakshmir Bhandar, with Adhikari stating that over 1.2 crore women have received payments and that verification will continue until 30 August. The Nandigram by-election, where Adhikari won by a margin of nearly 9,700 votes, is expected to serve as an early test of the new administration’s political capital. The details of the Ayushman Divas programme are to be unveiled on 16 August.
