Weekend of Fatal Crashes and Police Pursuits Claims at Least 11 Lives Across Three Continents

From Brazil to Australia and Indonesia, a spate of road incidents left multiple dead and injured, with authorities investigating each case.

At least eleven people died in a series of road collisions and police pursuits across Brazil, Australia, and Indonesia over the weekend, with several others injured, according to local authorities. The incidents, spanning from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon, involved passenger vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, and pedestrians, and included multiple vehicle fires and cross-border chases.

In Brazil, the most severe single event occurred on the BR-277 motorway in Paraná state, where a head-on collision between an electric car and a pickup truck caused the car to catch fire. The driver died at the scene, while his wife and three children, aged 2, 9, and 11, were hospitalised with serious injuries; the youngest child suffered severe burns. Reports from the federal highway police and local media differ on the total number of injured, citing either seven or eight. Elsewhere in the country, a pedestrian was struck and killed during a police pursuit in Rio de Janeiro after a suspect driving a stolen vehicle lost control; the suspect also died following an exchange of gunfire with officers. In Rio Grande do Sul, a driver attempting an overtaking manoeuvre on the BR-116 collided head-on with a timber truck and died when his car ignited. Two young women were killed in Santa Catarina when their car was crushed by a truck on the BR-163. Separate incidents in the Federal District left a pedestrian dead on the BR-020 and a motorist dead after a collision with a truck on the DF-180. A parachutist also died in Resende, Rio de Janeiro state, after a fall that remains under investigation.

In Australia, a police pursuit that began on the Gold Coast in Queensland crossed into New South Wales early Sunday, ending when the driver of a white utility vehicle was found unconscious after driving on shredded tyres for 26 kilometres. Officers deployed pepper spray before removing him from the vehicle; he could not be revived. A modified long-arm firearm was recovered from the car. In a separate Canberra pursuit, a man allegedly ran red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road before tyre deflation devices stopped his vehicle; he was arrested and charged. South of Brisbane, a 32-year-old pedestrian died after being struck by two cars while attempting to cross the Pacific Motorway on foot. New South Wales police also extradited a man from a Yass motel to Canberra, charging him over a stolen motorcycle and the alleged possession of a loaded handgun and taser.

In Indonesia, Jakarta police arrested a man suspected of being part of a motorcycle theft network from Lampung, alleging he carried a firearm and had committed around 20 thefts in South Jakarta. A Smith & Wesson pistol and ammunition were seized.

Investigations into all incidents are ongoing, led by local police and forensic units. No common thread links the events, and authorities have not suggested any coordinated pattern. The provisional toll may be revised as more information becomes available.
