The Royal Belgian Football Association announced on Friday that Mark van Bommel will take over as head coach, with his contract running until the 2028 European Championship. The Dutchman succeeds Rudi Garcia, whose tenure ended despite Belgium reaching the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals, where they lost 2-1 to eventual champions Spain. Garcia’s contract expired at the end of July and, after what Belgian media described as differences with both players and technical director Vincent Mannaert, the federation opted for a younger, tactically meticulous replacement.

Belgium’s route to the last eight had been uneven. Group-stage draws against Egypt and Iran drew criticism from Mannaert, who was said to be dissatisfied with the team’s performances. Although the Red Devils improved as the tournament progressed—becoming the only side to score against Spain in normal time—the 62-year-old Garcia’s departure still caught many supporters off guard, with bewilderment expressed on social media. Federation officials, however, had long signalled a preference for a coach with fresh ideas and lower mileage.

Van Bommel, 49, brings deep familiarity with the Belgian game. A combative midfielder in his playing days—a World Cup finalist with the Netherlands in 2010 and a European champion at club level with Barcelona—he forged a reputation as a detail-obsessed coach during a two-year spell at Royal Antwerp. There he delivered the club’s first league title in 66 years, together with a domestic cup, in 2022–23. ‘It is a great honour,’ Van Bommel said after accepting the post, praising Belgium’s ‘outstanding players and enormous potential’ and vowing to build a side that is ‘disciplined, ambitious and brave.’ He will be joined by assistants Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond. Mannaert welcomed the appointment, calling Van Bommel ‘highly motivated and ambitious’ and citing his international experience.

Van Bommel’s first competitive test is a daunting Nations League group containing Italy, France and Turkey, beginning with an away match against Italy on 25 September. Viewed from Brussels, these fixtures will quickly reveal whether his tactical rigour and man-management can blend a transitional squad—still carrying members of the ‘golden generation’ alongside emerging talent—into a side that can rattle Europe’s best. The contract term itself signals that the federation’s horizon stretches far beyond this autumn: Van Bommel has been hired to shape a team for Euro 2028.
