US Naval Blockade of Iran Persists as Airstrikes Pause for Diplomacy

CENTCOM reports boarding and disabling vessels while Trump halts bombing to allow negotiation, and Iran vows to continue attacks.

The United States maintained its naval blockade of Iranian ports over the weekend, boarding one tanker and disabling another, as President Donald Trump ordered a temporary halt to airstrikes to allow diplomatic contacts to proceed. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the blockade “remains in full effect,” and that since its renewal, American forces have redirected 12 commercial vessels attempting to bypass it, disabled two that failed to comply, and boarded two for inspection.

On Saturday, US personnel completed a verification boarding of the Comoros-flagged M/T Charminar in the Arabian Sea, after which the tanker was allowed to continue its journey. The previous day, CENTCOM disabled the Mozambique-flagged M/T Lavine in the Gulf of Oman, saying its crew had repeatedly ignored warnings and attempted to breach the blockade. A command spokesman said a missile strike on the engine room was used after multiple admonitions. According to figures released by CENTCOM, the total number of intercepted vessels rose to 14, underscoring the operational tempo of the maritime cordon.

Viewed from Washington, the enforcement action proceeds even as Trump paused bombing raids late Friday to give Iran “another chance to return to the negotiating table,” according to Israeli and US media reports. An Iranian health minister confirmed no attacks occurred overnight, and Qatar announced the resumption of civilian maritime navigation as a sign of regional de-escalation. However, Tehran stated that its strikes on US interests would continue “until the total surrender of the enemy,” and Iranian officials have previously accused Washington of violating a June 18 ceasefire that was meant to end hostilities dating to late February.

The blockade has confronted commercial shipping with a new reality in the Strait of Hormuz, where CENTCOM says it provides military escorts to maintain safe passage. In London, defence ministers and senior commanders from the US, UK and other allies are expected to meet next week to discuss the formation of an international coalition to protect maritime traffic. Diplomatically, American and Iranian emissaries are reported to be in contact, though no substantive breakthrough has been announced. The dossier remains open: the naval cordon stays in force, the pause in airstrikes is conditional, and Tehran’s threats of retaliation leave the horizon uncertain.
