The United States Department of State issued a worldwide security alert on Monday, its fourth such advisory in recent days, warning American citizens of a “complex” security environment and the potential for “unforeseen escalation” as military exchanges with Iran intensify. The notice urged Americans in the Middle East to exercise heightened vigilance, prepare for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and travel disruptions, and to reconsider travel to or through the region. The alert also stated that US diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have been targeted, and that Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests or locations associated with the United States and Americans globally.

The advisory coincided with a tenth consecutive night of US strikes on Iran, which US Central Command said were aimed at degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported explosions in multiple cities, including Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Isfahan, and Shiraz, and the activation of air defences near the Bushehr nuclear power plant. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it had struck US military sites, including air defence systems in Bahrain and Kuwait. President Donald Trump, writing on his Truth Social platform, declared that Iran “will pay the price” for killing American soldiers, and threatened to expand the target list to include power plants, bridges, and the underground nuclear site at Jabal al-Fass, as well as to seize Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export terminal. The Pentagon has reported nearly 100 US military casualties over the past two weeks, with the death toll rising to at least 17, according to Trump.

Viewed from Tehran, the escalation follows what Iranian sources describe as the US violation of a ceasefire agreement brokered in Islamabad. According to Iranian state-affiliated media, the US resumed military operations and imposed a naval blockade on 7 July 2026, after alleging attacks on vessels transiting the southern Strait of Hormuz. Washington, through official statements, has justified its military presence and actions as necessary to defend freedom of navigation. Iranian officials, however, have consistently argued that the security of the strategic waterway should be guaranteed through cooperation among coastal states, without the intervention of external military powers.

The global alert underscores the widening geographical scope of the confrontation, with the State Department explicitly warning that US diplomatic missions and interests worldwide face heightened risk. The department advised citizens to register for security updates and to monitor local embassy alerts. With no diplomatic track currently visible and both sides signalling continued military action, the conflict threatens further disruption to global energy supplies and commercial shipping through one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.
