Syrian security forces intercepted a substantial consignment of advanced weaponry concealed inside an oil tanker at the Tanf border crossing with Iraq on 16 July, the interior ministry in Damascus announced. The seized cargo included long-range missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, drones, and components that the Alma Research and Education Center assessed as consistent with Paveh-family cruise missiles and factory-prepared drone munitions. The ministry stated the shipment was destined for the Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah and that investigations are under way to identify all individuals and networks involved.

The new Syrian authorities, who came to power after the removal of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, have framed the operation as part of a nationwide strategy to combat arms and drug smuggling and to prevent Syrian territory from being used as a transit corridor. “Protecting the borders and preserving national sovereignty are paramount priorities,” the interior ministry said, adding that it would not allow the country to become a launching point for activities threatening neighbouring states. Hezbollah, through its affiliated broadcaster al-Manar, rejected the accusation as “completely false” and part of “invented, unfounded narratives” designed to harm the group and serve the objectives of the United States and Israel. The movement has consistently denied maintaining any presence on Syrian soil.

Viewed from Washington, the interception coincides with sustained American pressure on both Damascus and Baghdad to curb Iran-backed armed groups. President Donald Trump, who hosted Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa at the White House earlier this year, said this week that he had suggested to Israel that Syria could “take care of Hezbollah” in Lebanon. The US administration has also urged Iraq to disarm Tehran-aligned militias, a message reiterated during Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to Washington. The Tanf crossing, once the site of a US military garrison that backed local rebel forces, is now administered by the Syrian Transitional Government and has become a key route for Iraqi oil tankers heading to the Mediterranean, traffic that has increased since Iran imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.

The Alma Research Center noted that the shipment’s composition—particularly the large number of drones and optical fibre spools—matches Hezbollah’s current force build-up priorities, including the strengthening of its aerial unit and the Radwan Force. Syrian authorities have previously announced the dismantling of several Hezbollah-linked cells accused of plotting attacks inside Syria. The interior ministry said the seized weapons have been handed over to competent bodies for further investigation and legal action. The dossier remains open, with Damascus signalling that it will pursue all those implicated in the smuggling attempt.
