In the early hours of Friday morning in La Silleta, a small town in Argentina’s north-western province of Salta, a 55-year-old woman was killed in her home, her body bearing more than 40 wounds from a blade that prosecutors described as a large knife or short machete. The victim, Viviana Vilte, is one of several women whose deaths are being investigated as femicides across Latin America in recent days, while authorities in North Africa are probing a separate attempted killing by fire.
The suspect in the Salta case, the victim’s partner, was detained at the scene and has been charged with triple homicide – citing the couple’s relationship, gender-based violence, and extreme cruelty – according to local judicial sources. The killing brings the province’s tally of gender-related violent deaths to six so far this year, already matching the total recorded for all of 2025, data from Salta’s Observatory on Violence against Women shows. ‘We have reached in half a year the same number we had in the whole of last year,’ the observatory’s director told local media.
Further north, in the Mexican city of Torreón, Coahuila, a 28-year-old woman named Nora was stabbed to death in her home early Sunday, allegedly by her ex-partner, who was arrested within hours, state prosecutors said. In the Brazilian capital, Brasília, a man was detained after allegedly setting his ex-partner on fire, causing burns to her, her sister, her brother-in-law and himself; the suspect was found receiving medical treatment at a nearby market. And in the Colombian municipality of Santa Rosa, in Argentina’s north, a 36-year-old woman died of a gunshot wound in hospital on Sunday and her partner was detained as a suspect, judicial officials confirmed.
Meanwhile, in Peru, the death of an 86-year-old woman, Gladys Valencia Cabrera, found in her home in Ica with her belongings in disarray, is being treated as suspicious; a post-mortem is pending. Across the Atlantic, in Djelfa, Algeria, police arrested a man within 30 minutes of him pouring petrol on another man and attempting to set him alight; the victim remains in critical condition with severe burns, according to security services. Authorities in all cases say investigations continue, and some charges remain provisional.
