Son of Chiefs Coach Eric Bieniemy Charged with Shooting Mother

Mia Bieniemy, 57, was hospitalised with multiple gunshot wounds after an incident at the family’s Ashburn home; her 27-year-old son Elijah is held without bond.

A domestic shooting in northern Virginia has left the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy wounded and the couple’s adult son in custody. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn late on Sunday evening, where they found 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition on Monday, medical sources report. Her son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was arrested at the scene and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Centre.

Eric Bieniemy, 56, was with the Chiefs at their training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, at the time of the incident. He left the team to return to Virginia and was absent from Monday’s practice. The club issued a brief statement confirming it was aware of the situation and asking for privacy, adding that “our thoughts and prayers are with them.” Head coach Andy Reid is expected to address reporters later, though the organisation has declined to offer further details.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not disclosed a possible motive. The family home is located in a residential area of Ashburn, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Eric Bieniemy returned to the Chiefs this year for a second stint as offensive coordinator, having previously served in the role from 2018 to 2022, a period during which the team won two Super Bowls. He has also held coaching positions with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA.

As of Monday, Mia Bieniemy’s condition was described as stable, and Elijah Bieniemy remained in custody pending further court proceedings. No additional information about the circumstances of the shooting has been released by investigators.
