The house lights in Hall H blinked out, and when they surged back, a figure in a simple black jacket stood centre stage, squinting into the roar. Ryan Gosling’s first words — “Wow, is this really happening?” — could have been scripted by the thousands of fans who packed the San Diego convention centre on Saturday. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had just confirmed what Gosling himself had publicly wished for since at least 2022: the actor would become the newest Ghost Rider, the motorcycle-straddling Spirit of Vengeance, in a standalone feature arriving in 2028. Gosling let the crowd’s fever break, then added, quiet and direct, “This is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time.”

The casting marks the culmination of a fixation that has shadowed Gosling’s career from odd angles. He has twice played stuntmen — a roving bank robber on a bike in The Place Beyond the Pines, a battered double in The Fall Guy — and in interviews repeatedly cited Johnny Blaze, the original Ghost Rider, as the Marvel figure he most coveted. Feige, speaking on a podcast in 2022, had teased that “if Ryan wants to be Ghost Rider…”, leaving a door ajar. Now that door is open. Shawn Levy, who directed Deadpool & Wolverine and is currently finishing Star Wars: Starfighter with Gosling, will helm the film. On stage, Levy recalled how the project grew from stolen moments on the Starfighter set: “As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing. And I finally said, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’”

The character inhabits a strange space in Hollywood memory. Nicolas Cage first wore Ghost Rider’s flaming skull in 2007, in a film co-starring Eva Mendes — Gosling’s real-life partner of more than a decade. That earlier, non-MCU outing and its 2012 sequel drew mixed reactions but grossed over $361 million worldwide, while a later television incarnation, Robbie Reyes, appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. played by Gabriel Luna. The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus had also long campaigned for the role, making the announcement a moment of partial disappointment for some online communities. Yet Feige’s preference for Gosling appeared settled years ago, when he told an interviewer, “Ryan is amazing. I’d love to find a place for him in the MCU.” Gosling, for his part, once joked that he was simply glad someone in his household finally got to play Ghost Rider.

The reveal landed within a volley of announcements at the MCU’s Saturday panel, including a Black Panther III casting and a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, but Gosling’s entry generated a particular headiness. The hall, which hours earlier had seen Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom receive a regal unveiling and Ryan Reynolds crash the stage in a denim Deadpool costume, responded to Gosling’s confirmation with something closer to relief — a long-teased promise made concrete. Levy, reflecting on the noise, said, “I’m having the greatest flashback vibes … I’ll never forget that night, because I was introduced to the greatest fans.” The film has no official plot details, but the image that lingered after the lights went down was not of hellfire or chains, but of two collaborators mid-riff, turning downtime into a ride that won’t touch asphalt until 2028.
