Ronald Koeman Resigns as Netherlands Coach After Penalty Shootout Loss to Morocco
The Dutch manager stepped down within hours of a dramatic World Cup last-32 exit, accepting full responsibility and hinting his coaching career may be over.
Ronald Koeman announced his immediate resignation as head coach of the Netherlands on Tuesday, less than a day after his side were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup by Morocco in a penalty shootout. In a statement posted to Instagram, the 63-year-old said he had taken the decision overnight and that “no one is more disappointed than I am.” The Dutch had entered the tournament in North America ranked eighth in the world and topped Group F, but their campaign unravelled in the knockout stage in Monterrey, Mexico.
The round-of-32 tie had appeared to be slipping away from Morocco when Cody Gakpo put the Netherlands ahead in the 72nd minute. Yet deep into stoppage time, Issa Diop forced an equaliser, and after a goalless extra period the match went to penalties. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert from the spot, while Morocco missed only twice, allowing Ismael Saibari to seal a 3-2 shootout victory. European football analysts were swift to criticise Koeman’s approach: he deployed a five-man defensive line and the Netherlands managed just 30 per cent possession. Former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, speaking on Fox Sports, said he “did not recognise” the team and accused Koeman of abandoning the Dutch attacking identity, while Thierry Henry also questioned the tactical setup.
Koeman’s resignation statement went beyond football. He revealed that his wife, Bartina, is battling breast cancer, and that the experience had reshaped his priorities. “Football has been my life, but health is priceless,” he wrote, adding that she had encouraged him to continue in the role despite her illness. The personal disclosure was widely noted across European and Middle Eastern media. Separately, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) issued a condemnation of the racist abuse directed at Kluivert, Timber and Summerville on social media after their missed penalties, calling the comments “appalling” and vowing to pursue criminal complaints where possible.
Koeman’s departure ends his second spell in charge of the national team, which began in January 2023 after Louis van Gaal’s tenure. Under his guidance, the Netherlands reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024 but failed to record a victory against any side ranked in FIFA’s top 25. KNVB technical director Nigel de Jong described the World Cup campaign as “disappointing” and said the objective had been a semi-final place. The federation indicated it would not rush to appoint a successor, though Dutch media have already listed former international Patrick Kluivert among the candidates. Morocco, meanwhile, advance to a round-of-16 meeting with Canada on 4 July, carrying the momentum of a historic result that has resonated across the African continent and its diaspora.
