Indonesian search and rescue teams, supported by naval and police vessels, continued scouring the waters off Selayar Island on Saturday for 20 people still missing after the motor vessel KM Nurul Salsa sank on 15 July. According to the Makassar search and rescue agency (Basarnas), five more survivors were found alive earlier in the day, clinging to a fishing float, bringing the confirmed number of those rescued to 57. One body has been recovered. The vessel was carrying 78 passengers and crew when it suffered engine failure and went down in rough seas west of Pulau Polassi. Authorities in Makassar said the search area had been expanded to 448 square nautical miles, with additional ships and personnel arriving from Kendari and Maumere.

Off the coast of Mauritania, the coastguard rescued 37 irregular migrants from a boat that had spent 25 days adrift after departing Banjul, Gambia, bound for the Canary Islands. The Mauritanian fisheries ministry reported that the vessel, originally carrying around 160 people, had run out of fuel, food and water; survivors told rescuers they had been forced to drink seawater. One body was retrieved, and 122 people remain unaccounted for. The survivors—nationals of Senegal, Gambia and Guinea-Conakry—were taken to Nouadhibou, where seven, including two women and two minors, were hospitalised.

In the Mediterranean, Spanish maritime rescue services evacuated 11 people from a catamaran that began sinking near Tabarca Island, off Santa Pola, Alicante. All were brought ashore safely to the port of Santa Pola for medical checks. The rescue coordination centre in Madrid noted that the operation, involving a helicopter, a patrol boat and local fire services, demonstrated the effectiveness of inter-agency coordination. The semi-submerged vessel was later towed to port under difficult conditions.

Elsewhere, a joint search and rescue team evacuated a hiker who lost consciousness at 2,200 metres on Mount Agung in Bali, according to the Denpasar search and rescue office. The man, part of a group of eight, was reached by local guides and carried down before being transferred to a community health centre. In Jambi, Indonesia, two fishermen reported missing after setting out early on 17 July were found alive and adrift at sea by a search unit and returned to their families. And in Colombia, prosecutors announced the imprisonment of a man accused of organising a 2023 migrant crossing from San Andrés to Nicaragua in which 42 people, including 12 children, disappeared; the vessel was reportedly overloaded and lacked permits. Investigations into the KM Nurul Salsa sinking are also under way, with Indonesian police questioning the captain and nine crew members.
