Range Rover will add a fifth model line, the all-electric GT, marking the brand’s first move into a dedicated grand-touring silhouette built on the EMA platform. The vehicle, to be produced at Halewood, launches exclusively as a battery-electric car, with a full-hybrid variant to follow later in its lifecycle. The interior abandons traditional Range Rover design language, adopting a single central screen and a separate driver display, a layout that, viewed from London, signals JLR’s intent to reposition the nameplate for a lower, more aerodynamic form while retaining all-terrain capability.

A separate development from Japan suggests Toyota is advancing its own electric off-road plans. A senior European executive posted an image of a heavily camouflaged SUV parked beside a Land Cruiser 300 Series at the Tahara plant. The prototype’s closed-off grille and apparent monocoque body, likely borrowed from the Grand Highlander, point to reduced cooling needs consistent with a battery-electric powertrain. Japanese media have previously reported on a monocoque Land Cruiser Sport project for 2028, and the 2023 Land Cruiser Se concept previewed a full-electric, monocoque design. Toyota has not confirmed the prototype’s identity, but the sighting intensifies speculation that the next Land Cruiser EV will abandon the body-on-frame architecture that has defined the series for decades.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, is filling a gap in its electrified lineup with a new full-hybrid system for the Golf and T-Roc. The 125 kW unit pairs a 1.5-litre TSI evo2 petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.6 kWh battery, operating in three automatic modes: electric-only, engine-as-generator, and combined drive. The system cuts CO₂ emissions by 10–15 per cent versus the 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid, with savings reaching 35 per cent in urban cycles, while delivering 309 Nm of torque and a 0–100 km/h time of 7.5 seconds. The technology, positioned between mild and plug-in hybrids, targets buyers who want lower running costs without external charging.

Anniversary editions are also pushing electrified variants into showrooms. Fiat is producing 550 units each of the Toro and Fastback mild-hybrid special editions to mark 50 years in Brazil, equipping the Toro Volcano with a 48V MHEV system and ADAS features. In Japan, Toyota’s Corolla Sport G Z Active Elegance celebrates 60 years of the nameplate with a bi-tone exterior and hybrid powertrain unchanged from the standard car, priced at ¥3.44 million. Both campaigns use milestone moments to associate hybrid technology with heritage models.

Further details on the Range Rover GT are expected later this year, while Toyota’s next move on the Land Cruiser EV remains unconfirmed. The VW full-hybrid system is set to reach European showrooms in the coming months, offering a near-term benchmark for real-world efficiency gains.
