Rail Disruptions Across Three Continents: Sabotage Suspected in Germany, Smoke in Sydney, Signal Failures in India

Authorities in Germany, Australia, and India are investigating separate rail safety incidents, from a claimed extremist attack to recurring technical faults.

Rail services in Germany, Australia, and India were disrupted this week by a series of incidents that have prompted investigations ranging from suspected sabotage to systemic signal failures. No injuries were reported in any of the events, but each has raised concerns about the vulnerability of critical transport infrastructure.

In western Germany, a fire damaged signal cables on the busy Düsseldorf–Cologne line on 10 July, forcing a complete suspension of regional and long-distance services. German security sources told domestic media that a technical defect was considered unlikely and that sabotage was suspected. A statement posted on the left-wing platform Indymedia, purportedly from a group calling itself “Kommando Angry Birds,” claimed responsibility, saying incendiary devices had been placed in cable shafts near Leverkusen. The group cited “mass extinction” as its motive. Police in Cologne said they were examining the authenticity of the claim and whether it was linked to other offences. The same group had previously claimed an attack on the Düsseldorf–Duisburg line in July 2025 and an attempted attack on a substation in Erkrath in January 2026. As of 11 July, Deutsche Bahn could not say when the line would reopen.

In Sydney, Australia, light rail services on the L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford lines were suspended on 11 July after smoke was detected on the roofs of two trams in separate incidents. The first occurred near Wynyard station in the central business district around 7:55 a.m., the second near South Dowling Street in Surry Hills about two and a half hours later. Operator Transdev said no passengers or staff were injured and that the suspension was a precaution while a risk assessment was conducted. Replacement buses were deployed. The incidents follow another light rail vehicle fire earlier in the month, making it the third fire-related event on the network in a fortnight.

In India, railway safety has come under scrutiny after two recent signal failures in Southern Railway’s Chennai division. On 5 March, a suburban train motorman braked sharply after spotting two trains stationary on the same track ahead, despite a signal authorising him to proceed. An inquiry found the signal displayed an incorrect aspect, likely due to an unauthorised resetting of a digital axle counter. On 28 June, an express train was diverted onto the wrong route because of an incorrect points setting. The All India Loco Running Staff Association has expressed concern that recurring signalling failures undermine crew confidence. Separately, the Ministry of Railways issued an alert to all zones about frequent cable cuts during infrastructure works, warning that such damage could lead to “catastrophic consequences.”

Investigations are ongoing in all three countries. German state security police are leading the inquiry into the suspected sabotage, while Australian transport safety authorities are assessing the light rail incidents. Indian railway officials have reiterated standard operating procedures and are imposing penalties on contractors for cable damage.

The characterization of the left as 'extremist' or 'chaos-makers' is not reported, nor is the severity of the damage emphasized, keeping a detached tone.
