The superyacht Graceful, long associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, was observed on Monday transiting Danish waters in the Kattegat, accompanied by a Russian destroyer and a patrol boat. The vessel’s automatic identification system (AIS) transponder, silent since 30 August 2022, was reactivated, allowing maritime tracking platforms to log its position. Photographs from coastal observers and satellite imagery confirmed the yacht’s identity. The convoy passed through the Great Belt around midnight and was expected to round Skagen by early afternoon, with Istanbul listed as its destination.

Danish defence command stated that its forces, including the patrol boat P521 Freja, were conducting routine monitoring of foreign state vessels in Danish straits. German coast guard units have also been shadowing the convoy since Sunday morning, alternating with Danish assets. Viewed from Moscow, the naval escort underscores the Kremlin’s determination to protect assets linked to the head of state, even as the yacht’s transponder reactivation after nearly three years of radio silence remains unexplained. Western intelligence assessments have long identified the Graceful as one of several luxury vessels used by Putin, and the US Treasury imposed sanctions on it in June 2022.

The reappearance of the Graceful in international waters with a military escort is being read by European security analysts as a deliberate signal of continued Russian naval reach in the Baltic and North Sea, despite the operational demands of the war in Ukraine. The convoy’s route through the Danish straits, a chokepoint for Russian vessels transiting from the Baltic to the Atlantic, tests the boundaries of routine passage under international law. The reactivation of the AIS transponder, after a period of deliberate concealment, may reflect a calculation that visibility now serves a purpose—perhaps to demonstrate that the vessel and its owner remain beyond the reach of Western sanctions enforcement.

The 82-metre Graceful, built in 2014 and valued at over $100 million according to Western estimates, is the second-largest yacht linked to Putin after the 140-metre Scheherazade, which was detained in Italy in 2022. The Graceful was previously spotted in Sochi during Putin’s visits and underwent repairs in Hamburg before being hastily moved to Kaliningrad just before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to investigations by associates of the late opposition figure Alexei Navalny. After its transponder was deactivated, the yacht was sighted off Estonia and later near St. Petersburg, according to Western media reports, and was reportedly renamed “Kosatka.” The current voyage marks its first long-distance transit since the war began.

The convoy’s final destination remains unconfirmed beyond the Istanbul waypoint, and it is unclear whether the yacht will enter the Mediterranean. Danish and German authorities continue to track the vessels, and the episode is likely to prompt further scrutiny from Western governments regarding the enforcement of sanctions on assets linked to the Russian president. No official comment has been issued by the Kremlin.
