Police officer among four dead in Ohio shooting as US holiday weekend turns violent

Multiple shootings and mass disturbances across the United States over the Independence Day weekend left several dead, dozens injured, and hundreds arrested.

A police officer was shot dead while responding to a 911 call in Rittman, Ohio, on Sunday night, one of several violent incidents that marred the Fourth of July weekend across the United States. The suspected gunman and two other people also died in the exchange, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Two additional officers and a police dog were injured, authorities said, though their conditions have not been disclosed.

In North Charleston, South Carolina, a separate confrontation saw a female officer assaulted by a crowd after gunfire erupted at a permitted block party on 4 July. Video footage showed the officer being pulled to the ground and struck repeatedly before a colleague intervened. Police said four people — one adult and three juveniles — have been arrested in connection with the assault, and multiple firearms and a makeshift spear were recovered at the scene. No civilian injuries were reported.

The holiday period also saw large-scale disturbances linked to so-called ‘teen takeovers’ organised via social media. In Raleigh, North Carolina, around 10,000 adolescents gathered in two areas on Saturday night, leading to fights and multiple shootings that left nine people wounded, according to the Raleigh Police Department. The mayor said she is considering a youth curfew. On the West Coast, more than 400 arrests were made in Newport Beach, California, after a crowd of juveniles and young adults blocked roads, set off fireworks, and damaged businesses. Local officials described the event as a ‘TikTok takeover’ that drew thousands within minutes.

In Chicago, two police officers were shot during a traffic stop on Friday but were protected by their ballistic vests; the suspect was critically wounded. Preliminary police figures recorded 11 shooting incidents across the city over the weekend, leaving three dead and 16 injured — a decline from the previous year’s holiday toll. Investigations into all incidents remain active, and authorities have not yet established motives or connections between the events.
