Dry season peaks across Indonesia as clear skies push temperatures to 34°C

BMKG forecasts show virtually rain-free conditions from Jakarta to East Java, while haze settles over Pekanbaru and a brief warm spell lifts Buenos Aires.

The Indonesian archipelago entered a pronounced dry phase on Friday, with the national meteorology agency BMKG forecasting clear to partly cloudy skies and no significant rainfall across the country’s most populous islands. In the greater Jakarta area, temperatures were expected to reach 33°C, accompanied by light winds of 2–20 km/h. East Java’s major cities—Surabaya, Kediri, Madiun, and Blitar—faced similar conditions, with maximums of 34°C and winds from the east and southeast at 10–25 km/h, a pattern the agency described as typical of the peak dry season. The uniformity of the forecast across Java and southern Sumatra signals a well-established high-pressure system suppressing convection and keeping monsoon moisture confined to the far east.

That eastern periphery saw a different picture. BMKG data for Papua province showed light rain in Keerom, Waropen, and the Yapen Islands, while Jayapura and Sarmi remained overcast with humidity above 90%. In Sorong, West Papua, all ten districts were blanketed by cloud, with temperatures holding at 24–30°C. Further west, on the island of Sumatra, the city of Pekanbaru recorded a phenomenon the agency termed “udara kabur”—a haze-like reduction in visibility caused by suspended dust, smoke, or pollutants—affecting several subdistricts from morning until midday. Humidity there ranged from 71% to 96%, and temperatures stayed between 24°C and 31°C, conditions that can trap particulates near the surface and degrade air quality.

Beyond Southeast Asia, two other regional weather events stood out. Iran’s Tehran Province meteorological office warned of a sharp temperature drop accompanied by strong winds and dust storms, particularly in the southern and western parts of the province, through the end of the week. Maximums in the capital were forecast at 38°C, but the wind-driven dust was expected to reduce air quality and visibility, with the alert extended through Sunday night. In Argentina’s Buenos Aires metropolitan area, a brief northerly flow pushed Saturday’s maximum to 17°C under partly cloudy skies, a notable departure from the week’s earlier chill, before a cold front arriving after midnight was set to drop Sunday’s high back to 14°C with overcast skies and possible drizzle.

With the dry season now firmly established across Java and parts of Sumatra, attention turns to the ancillary risks that accompany prolonged rainless spells: increased fire danger in forest and peatland areas, heat stress for outdoor workers, and pressure on urban water supplies. BMKG’s routine updates remain the primary source for tracking any shift in the monsoon pattern, while local health and disaster agencies in haze-affected zones are monitoring particulate levels. The next significant meteorological signal to watch is the potential arrival of a dry-season break or an early transition to the wet season, though climatological norms suggest the current pattern will persist for several more weeks.
