The body of Luigi Esposito, a 53-year-old Italian journalist who covered football for local media and also worked as a regional environmental official, was discovered in a rural area near Eboli, in the southern province of Salerno, on the morning of 19 July. Firefighters attending a scrubland blaze found the badly charred remains. According to the Salerno prosecutor’s office, the death is being treated as homicide; investigators believe Esposito was shot before his body was set alight.

Esposito, known widely as Luca, was a registered journalist since 2012 and a familiar voice to local football fans. He directed the website TuttoSalernitana.com, was an editorialist for TuttoC.com, and appeared regularly as a commentator on the private broadcaster OttoChannel. He also held a managerial position at Arpac, the regional environmental protection agency, based in Avellino. Colleagues described him as forthright and passionate about sport, but none reported that he had received threats or was involved in contentious reporting; his work was exclusively sports journalism, with no forays into crime or judicial affairs.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cantone stated that initial findings point to a homicide. Shell casings were recovered at the scene, and the severity of the burns initially made it impossible to determine even the sex of the victim. The breakthrough in identification came when a car registered to Esposito was found abandoned nearby. Formal confirmation via DNA or forensic analysis is still pending, but the prosecutor’s office has named him as the presumed victim. Investigators are reconstructing his final hours: according to people familiar with his schedule, he was in the coastal town of Agropoli on Friday evening and had routine online contact with colleagues at 22:34. After that, his habitual late-night messages ceased, suggesting the attack may have occurred before midnight.

No motive has been established and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation, led by the Salerno prosecutor’s office and the Carabinieri, remains at an early stage, with an autopsy expected to clarify the exact cause and time of death. Italian journalists’ unions have expressed shock and are awaiting further details. For now, authorities maintain a strict reserve, telling media only that all avenues are being explored.
