Israeli Police Investigate Officer After Stun Grenade Thrown Into Car in Qalandia

CCTV footage shows the officer forcing the door shut as the driver tries to flee; separate incidents leave a teenager and an infant dead.

Israeli police have opened an investigation after security-camera footage emerged showing a Border Police officer throwing a stun grenade into a car with two occupants in the Qalandia refugee camp, in the occupied West Bank. The recording, which circulated widely on social media, captures the officer approaching the vehicle, shouting at those inside, and then, after a brief exchange, tossing the device through the open door. He forces the door closed as the driver attempts to escape. An explosion and a plume of smoke follow. The two passengers scramble out from the opposite side before the officer appears to fire his rifle in their direction. The Israeli rights group B’Tselem said everyone in the car survived. Police told Israeli media that the officer had not acted “in accordance with procedure” and that the case has been referred to the internal investigations department.

On the same day, Sunday, Israeli forces shot and killed 16-year-old Walid Abu Sneineh in Qalandia, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Two other children sustained gunshot wounds to their lower limbs. Israeli authorities, speaking to the BBC, said troops perceived an imminent threat after “a violent riot erupted during which [they] came under a massive barrage of stones” and that they responded with gunfire toward a suspect throwing stones from a rooftop.

Also on Sunday, a critically ill four-month-old baby, Ahmed Zaid, died after Israeli troops refused to open a gate blocking the main entrance to his village west of Ramallah, delaying access to urgent medical care, according to Ajith Sunghay, head of the local UN human rights office. Sunghay described the death as “senseless” and “emblematic of an occupying power continuing to show utter disregard for the humanity and rights of Palestinians living under occupation.” The Israeli military told the BBC that its troops “allowed the baby and his family to pass without any delay to continue receiving medical treatment.”

In a separate incident early Tuesday, Israeli Border Police officers were attacked at the Kalandiya checkpoint by several suspects who emerged from a civilian vehicle attempting to enter Israel from the West Bank. Police said the officers were punched and choked, and the suspects tried to seize their weapons. One officer fired into the air, and another shot two of the attackers in the lower body after seeing a colleague being strangled. It later emerged that the two wounded men were employed as security guards but were not identifiable as such at the time. Both were lightly wounded, as were several officers. The incident remains under investigation. Viewed from European and regional capitals, the cluster of events around Qalandia has sharpened scrutiny of the rules of engagement and checkpoint procedures. All investigations are ongoing, and no final findings have been released.
