Iran, Russia, and UAE Issue Severe Weather Warnings as Dust Storms and Rough Seas Threaten

Authorities across the Middle East and Russia have issued alerts for heavy rain, high winds, and hazardous maritime conditions, with Iran's Caspian coast under an orange warning.

Weather authorities in Iran, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates have issued a series of warnings for hazardous conditions over the coming days, including potential flooding, dust storms, and dangerously rough seas. No casualties or major damage have been reported so far, but multiple regions are on alert for disruptions to transport, agriculture, and maritime activity.

Iran’s meteorological organization has placed eight provinces under an orange warning—the second-highest alert level—for Thursday 25 June, citing the risk of heavy rainfall, thunder, hail, and sudden strong winds. The affected areas include the northern coasts along the Caspian Sea, the northwestern provinces of Ardabil and both Azerbaijans, and the northeastern highlands of Khorasan. Separate orange warnings cover the Caspian and the northern Persian Gulf, where winds of 24–30 knots and waves of 2–3 metres are expected, prompting a ban on recreational and fishing activities and restrictions on light and semi-heavy vessels. Yellow alerts for less severe but still disruptive weather extend across much of the country, from the western border regions to the southern slopes of the Alborz mountains and the southeast.

In Moscow, the private forecasting centre Fobos described a quieter picture: variable cloudiness, no precipitation, and temperatures of 20–23°C on Wednesday, with a north-westerly breeze. A state meteorologist separately cautioned that the capital should not expect a return to summer heat before early July, following a recent cold spell. The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology forecast fair to partly cloudy skies for Thursday, with a chance of afternoon rain over eastern and southern areas and rough patches in the Arabian Gulf. Meanwhile, Iranian sources offered conflicting maximum temperature predictions for Tehran on Thursday—ranging from 35°C to 38°C—reflecting the inherent uncertainty in local modelling.

Dust storms remain a particular concern for Iran. Forecasters say conditions are favourable for dust masses to form over Iraq and drift into western and southwestern provinces, reducing air quality and visibility. Orange wind alerts have been issued for southern Tehran, Semnan, Qom, and parts of Isfahan and Sistan-Baluchestan, with yellow warnings covering a wider swath from Kurdistan to Yazd. Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel, stay clear of riverbeds, and secure temporary structures. The warnings remain in effect, and emergency services are on standby, but the situation is still developing.
