Global automakers split between electrified luxury and combustion off-roaders
Simultaneous launches from Jeep, Mercedes, BMW and others reveal a market where 800-volt electric vans coexist with new turbocharged engines for emerging and adventure segments.
In a single week, product announcements from three continents laid bare a strategic divergence in the auto industry. Jeep confirmed the return of the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, while Mercedes-Benz unveiled the all-electric VLE-Class luxury van and BMW’s iX3 Neue Klasse demonstrated real-world range exceeding 800 kilometres. The parallel push into refined combustion off-roaders and high-voltage electric people-movers signals that manufacturers are not converging on a single technology path, but instead tailoring powertrains to distinct regional demands and use cases.
Jeep’s Trailhawk employs the Hurricane 4 Turbo engine with Turbulent Jet Ignition, tuned for low-speed off-road response, and pairs it with Quadra-Trac II four-wheel drive, air suspension and an electronic limited-slip differential. The package yields 324 horsepower and a towing capacity of 2,812 kilograms. Mercedes takes the opposite approach with the VLE-Class, built on the dedicated VAN.EA platform. Its 800-volt architecture allows a 115 kWh battery to recover 354 kilometres of range in 15 minutes at a 300 kW fast charger, with a total range of 650 kilometres. BMW’s iX3, already on sale in Mexico, uses Gen6 eDrive technology and an 800-volt system; independent testers in the United States recorded efficiency of 26.6 kWh per 100 kilometres, slightly better than the EPA estimate. In Brazil, GWM’s Haval H9 Selection retains a 2.4-litre turbodiesel, while Saipa in Iran prepares a facelifted Shahin with a new family of 1.5-litre turbo petrol engines producing up to 160 horsepower, underscoring that combustion remains the default in price-sensitive markets.
Viewed from Detroit, Stellantis is leveraging the Grand Cherokee’s off-road pedigree to sustain margins in North America, where the Trailhawk’s Trail Rated certification and 11.4 inches of ground clearance appeal to adventure buyers. From Stuttgart, Mercedes positions the VLE as a “Grand Limousine” for VIP transport, with a 31.3-inch rear screen, Burmester audio and a six-seat configuration aimed at hotels and airport services. In Asia, BMW Indonesia launched three M performance models—the M3 Touring, M2 and M2 CS—while Lexus’s ES 350e electric sedan, tested by a US automotive research firm, slightly exceeded its EPA range estimate of 292 miles, recording 293 miles in mixed driving. In Iran, Saipa’s SP1 FL project modernises the Shahin with design cues reminiscent of the previous-generation Kia Cerato and a new engine family that reduces import dependency.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and Overland are due in dealerships by late 2025 from the Detroit-Mack plant. The Mercedes VLE-Class will reach Europe and the United States in 2027, with a possible Maybach version under consideration. The Haval H9 Selection is now available in Brazil at R$339,000, and the Saipa facelift is expected next year. The next factual milestone is the market reception of these models, particularly whether the Trailhawk’s turbocharged four-cylinder can offset the absence of the previous V8, and whether the VLE’s electric-only strategy finds demand in the luxury shuttle segment.
