Extreme Weather Warnings Issued Across Iran, Algeria, and Italy Amid Heatwave and Storms

Meteorological agencies forecast abnormally high temperatures in ten Iranian provinces, while flash floods threaten northern regions and dust storms sweep North Africa.

Iranian meteorological officials have warned that a severe heatwave will grip ten provinces next week, with temperatures expected to rise abnormally in Khuzestan, Ilam, Kermanshah, Bushehr, Zanjan, West Azerbaijan, Qazvin, Alborz, Tehran, and Markazi. The forecast, issued on Tuesday, also cautioned of flash floods in northeastern Khorasan Razavi province, particularly around Quchan, Neyshabur, and Mashhad, where heavy rainfall is expected between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. local time. In the northern Mazandaran province, an orange-level alert has been activated for thunderstorms, hail, and possible river flooding from Wednesday afternoon through Friday.

Algeria’s National Meteorological Office placed several wilayas under a yellow-level vigilance on Tuesday, warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and sandstorms. The affected areas include Souk Ahras, Guelma, Constantine, and Batna in the east, with heatwave conditions persisting in Adrar and Bordj Badji Mokhtar in the deep south. Strong winds and blowing sand are also forecast for Illizi, Djanet, and Tamanrasset, where visibility may be reduced.

In Italy, a shift to cooler weather is bringing relief after a prolonged heatwave, but the Civil Protection Department has issued an orange alert for thunderstorms in the Marche region and yellow alerts for hydrogeological risk in Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Tuscany, and Trentino-Alto Adige. Temperatures are expected to drop to near or below seasonal averages in the north and along the Adriatic coast, though southern regions may see a brief return of heat by the weekend.

The warnings come as parts of the Middle East and North Africa endure a summer of extreme weather. Iranian researchers noted that temperatures in many areas are running 1–3°C above long-term averages, with some northern slopes of the Alborz mountains seeing anomalies of up to 6°C. No casualties have been reported so far, but authorities have urged residents to avoid riverbeds, secure loose structures, and limit outdoor activity during peak heat.
