European EV Sales Surge Past One Million in First Half as BYD Plots Global Expansion Without US Market

Battery-electric registrations in Europe jumped 33.7% year-on-year, while the Chinese automaker targets leadership through charging infrastructure and emerging-market growth.

Battery-electric vehicle registrations across Europe surpassed 1.24 million units in the first half of the year, a 33.7 percent increase on the same period in 2025, according to data from E-Mobility Europe, New Automotive and Fier Automotive. The surge pushed fully electric cars to 25.6 percent of the market in June, as fuel price rises and the approaching 2035 EU combustion-engine ban accelerated consumer adoption. Viewed from Brussels, the numbers reflect a regulatory framework that is reshaping demand: the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation now mandates fast-charging stations every 60 kilometres on major highways, while new energy-efficiency directives require pre-cabling in residential and commercial buildings to cut future installation costs.

The expansion of charging networks underpins the sales growth. Public charging points across the bloc now exceed one million, with the Netherlands leading at over 180,000, followed by Germany and France. The infrastructure buildout coincides with a strategic recalibration by manufacturers. European brands, pressed by emissions targets, are launching more compact and affordable electric models, while Chinese importers face additional tariffs that are forcing them to localise production and forge partnerships on the continent. The result, analysts in London note, is a market where both incumbents and challengers are investing in capacity rather than waiting for policy signals to firm up.

That competitive dynamic is personified by BYD. The Chinese automaker, which sold 4.5 million vehicles globally in 2025, has set a target of overtaking Toyota within five years without selling passenger cars in the United States. Stella Li, the company’s vice-president, told the Financial Times that growth would come organically from Latin America, Southeast Asia and Europe. In Indonesia, BYD has distributed more than 97,000 units since entering the market in 2024, claiming over 40 percent of the national EV segment. In Mexico, sales of electric, plug-in hybrid and extended-range vehicles rose 22 percent in the first half to a record 53,430 units, with the country’s Electro Mobility Association reporting a 55 percent increase in public and private charging connections.

BYD is now building 6,000 flash-charging stations outside China, with 3,000 planned for Europe by end-March 2027, 2,000 for the Americas and 1,000 for Asia-Pacific. The technology can deliver more than 900 kilometres of range in under 10 minutes of charging. The next factual milestone is the end of the first quarter of 2027, when the company’s European charging network is scheduled to reach operational status, a test of whether infrastructure deployment can keep pace with the sales trajectory that has already carried global EV deliveries into seven figures in a single region.
