A new American Heart Association analysis confirms moderate coffee intake lowers cardiovascular risk, while separate studies highlight benefits of plant proteins and a tomato-soy drink for inflammation.
A comprehensive review by the American Heart Association (AHA), published in the journal Circulation, has concluded that consuming up to five 8-ounce cups of caffeinated coffee per day—equivalent to 400 milligrams of caffeine—is safe for most healthy adults and is associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and type 2 diabetes. The analysis, which drew on large population studies and randomised clinical trials, found the lowest overall mortality risk among those drinking two to four cups daily, regardless of whether the coffee was caffeinated or decaffeinated. Viewed from Washington, the statement marks a significant consolidation of evidence on a beverage consumed by billions, though the AHA stressed the data do not prove causation.
Mechanisms behind the protective effect remain under investigation, but separate research points to coffee’s polyphenols and antioxidants, which may limit triglyceride production and lipid storage in fat cells. The method of preparation, however, sharply alters the risk profile. Unfiltered coffee—such as that made with a French press or boiled—releases cafestol, a compound that raises LDL cholesterol. Filtered coffee, by contrast, avoids this effect. The AHA also drew a firm line between coffee and high-caffeine energy drinks or shots, which can contain three to four times the caffeine concentration and have been linked to abnormal heart rhythms and blood pressure spikes even in low-risk individuals.
Two other dietary studies add to the picture of food-based cardiovascular protection. A small clinical trial at Ohio State University, involving 12 adults with obesity over four weeks, found that a specially formulated tomato-soy beverage high in lycopene and soy isoflavones significantly reduced three markers of systemic inflammation. The effect was not replicated with standard tomato juice, and researchers cautioned that the drink is not commercially available. Separately, observational research indicates that a daily intake of 20 grams of plant protein—from lentils, beans, tofu, or pumpkin seeds—is associated with a 16 per cent lower risk of developing hypertension, likely due to the potassium, magnesium, and fibre content of these foods.
All three lines of inquiry remain at an early stage. The AHA has called for further trials to understand individual variability in caffeine response and whether non-drinkers would benefit from starting. The tomato-soy study requires replication in larger cohorts before any dietary recommendations can be made. The next factual milestone will be the publication of long-term randomised controlled trials on coffee and cardiovascular endpoints, which researchers say are needed to move beyond association and establish causality.
