A spate of violent attacks on minors, including an abduction in Misiones and a father’s assault in Paraná, has highlighted gaps in child protection across the region.

The victim’s mother said the child now refuses to leave home and is terrified of being away from her father.
In Zacatecas, the 13-year-old suspect was charged with attempted femicide and rape, but Mexican law bars pretrial detention for minors aged 12 to 14. The state prosecutor acknowledged public frustration, while noting the boy is in state custody at a specialised facility. The case has revived calls to lower the age of criminal responsibility, though officials urge a focus on prevention.
Brazilian health ministry data show hospitalisations of children under nine from assault more than doubled between 2020 and 2024, to nearly 19,000. In Paraná, police are investigating whether the father who kicked his daughter also forced his children to kneel on dried beans; he told officers he “lost his head” because she was crying. Authorities are considering torture charges. Across the region, the cases have exposed gaps in child-protection systems. All suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
