A vehicle drove into a crowd of football supporters celebrating Mexico’s World Cup victory in the resort city of Cabo San Lucas on Wednesday night, injuring at least 17 people, according to Los Cabos city hall. The incident occurred on a main boulevard in the tourist zone shortly after the national team’s 3-0 win over the Czech Republic in the group stage, which secured the co-hosts’ place at the top of their group.
Footage verified by Reuters shows a black car surrounded by fans wearing Mexico shirts, some of whom are seen shaking the vehicle. The car then accelerates sharply into the crowd, throwing several people into the air before crashing into street bollards. Other videos show bystanders pulling the driver from the car and attacking him; multiple people are seen lying injured on the ground. The driver was subsequently arrested, though no formal charges have been announced. Medical sources report that the injured were distributed across at least four hospitals, with one person treated under emergency code.
City hall stated that “the vehicle was surrounded by a group of people and, for reasons to be determined by the competent authority, drove through the crowd, injuring several people.” The acting mayor expressed solidarity with those affected and pledged to keep the public informed. Authorities have not confirmed whether the driver accelerated deliberately or in response to the crowd’s actions, and the investigation remains open. The provisional injury toll includes the driver, who was also hospitalised after being beaten by onlookers.
